Whether you're an avid angler, a dedicated hiker, an equestrian enthusiast, or simply a family looking for a peaceful getaway, this site offers something for everyone. Its reputation for cleanliness, tranquility, and stunning natural beauty makes it a highly favored destination among Oklahoma's outdoor community.

This article will provide a comprehensive overview of the Cedar Lake Recreation Site, highlighting its location and accessibility, the range of services available, its unique features and highlights, and ultimately, why this exceptional spot is perfectly suited for Oklahoma locals seeking their next memorable outdoor adventure.

Location and Accessibility

The Cedar Lake Recreation Site is located at Hodgen, OK 74939, USA, placing it strategically in southeastern Oklahoma within the sprawling Ouachita National Forest. This region is known for its rugged mountains, lush forests, and abundant natural beauty, offering a genuine wilderness experience that is still highly accessible for residents across Oklahoma.

The campground is situated approximately 12 miles south of Heavener, Oklahoma, a convenient distance that allows for easy travel while still providing a sense of seclusion. Major highways in the region lead to the vicinity of Hodgen, and from there, well-maintained roads within the national forest lead directly to the recreation site. Despite its natural setting, the site's design, including a "pull around driveway" and ample trailer parking in some loops, ensures that even large RVs and horse trailers can navigate and park with ease.

One reviewer noted that their "North Shore campground, site 54" was "merely a stone's throw from the boat ramp and trailer parking." While this proximity might not be ideal for every camper seeking absolute solitude, it highlights the excellent accessibility to the lake's recreational amenities. The various camping loops (Equestrian, Sandy Beach, Shady Lane, and North Shore) are distributed around the lake, offering different levels of seclusion and convenience to specific features.

While cell service can be spotty, particularly for internet search, calls and texts are generally possible. This balance of being "off-grid" enough to disconnect but still connected for essential communication is a benefit for many modern campers.

Services Offered

Cedar Lake Recreation Site offers a spectrum of services designed to accommodate various camping styles, from those preferring a more rustic experience to those needing more amenities.

  • Diverse Campsite Types: The campground is divided into several loops, each offering different amenities:

While one review mentioned showers "take a while to warm up" and another noted no hot water or soap in the men's bathroom during their visit, general consensus points to them being well-maintained and convenient.
  • Potable Water: Water spigots are conveniently located throughout the campground, ensuring access to drinking water.
  • Picnic Tables, Grills, and Fire Rings: Almost all campsites come equipped with these essential amenities for outdoor cooking and enjoyment. Many also include lantern poles and tent pads.
  • Dump Station: Available for RV campers, allowing for convenient waste disposal.
  • Boat Ramp and Fishing Piers: Direct access to Cedar Lake for boating and fishing activities.

We stayed at the North Shore campground, site 54, March 7-15, 2025. This is a rustic campground, in that the sites do not have electric or water, but there is running water in the bath houses/restrooms, and there are water spigots throughout the campground. It is very quiet and peaceful, very well maintained, clean, and there is no unnecessary lighting around the campground - no giant poles with bright lights along the road or at the buildings. The minimal lighting is a huge plus for us!! The camp hosts are awesome, and so is their dog, Buddy, who paid us a visit that we thoroughly enjoyed. I'm rating it at 4 stars ONLY because I would have liked to know, prior to booking online, that my site was merely a stone's throw from the boat ramp and trailer parking. No one was disruptive, but it would have been nice to know before hand.

The south shore has electric and water and nice concrete pads. The shower house takes awhile to warm up and the cell service is bad. Could get text and calls but no interest search.

Very beautiful and peaceful. Surrounded by mountains and in the middle is the lake. A very beautiful and photographic landscape. The campsites are a little small and too close to each other, but we were fortunate that the day we camped there was no one around us. The restrooms are clean and have hot showers. The trails are nearby and very good for hiking. Lots of space for parking. The first come first serve basis of campsite booking is also a nice to have feature. Would definitely recommend this.

This is by far my favorite camping area. It's family and dog friendly. The tent sites on North Shore are very spacious and clean. The bathrooms have showers and are kept pretty clean. The swimming areas are nice. I highly recommend this place.

spent 3 nights here tents camping. real quiet place, we went in the middle of the week but there were no other campers in the whole area the entire stay. We camped close to the boat launch and over the entire stay 7 or 8 boaters/fishers came and went. The whole area was well kept and clean and Nicholas, the host/ area manager i believe was responsible for the immaculate upkeep. real nice guy for what it’s worth and very knowledgeable about the area.
