This state forest campground is renowned for providing a rustic and serene environment, appealing to campers who seek a genuine connection with nature and a wide array of outdoor recreational opportunities. Unlike highly developed commercial parks, Chase Creek focuses on offering a peaceful retreat, making it an ideal destination for anglers, hunters, hikers, and those simply wishing to unwind in a natural setting.
The environment at Chase Creek Campground is characterized by its deep immersion in the natural beauty of Northern Michigan. Located in Wexford County, it is situated in a heavily wooded area, providing ample shade and a sense of seclusion for campers. The presence of Chase Creek itself, which flows into the larger Manistee River, is a key ecological feature. The proximity to these waterways enhances the appeal for fishing and paddling enthusiasts, offering direct access to the water's edge.
Being a state forest campground, Chase Creek is surrounded by vast tracts of public land. This extensive natural backdrop provides an undisturbed habitat for various wildlife, allowing campers to experience nature firsthand. The landscape is typical of Michigan's northern forests, with a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, creating a visually appealing and ecologically rich setting. The rustic nature of the campground means less light pollution and noise, contributing to a more immersive outdoor experience where the sounds of nature prevail. This environment is particularly attractive during the vibrant fall color season and provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing year-round.
Chase Creek Campground offers services that align with its rustic appeal, focusing on the fundamental needs of campers while encouraging self-sufficiency and an appreciation for the outdoors. As a state forest campground, the amenities are designed to provide a comfortable yet unadorned camping experience.
- Campsites: The campground offers individual campsites, typically equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring. These sites are designed to accommodate tents and smaller RVs, providing a spacious and private feel due to the wooded surroundings.
- Water Access: While individual sites may not have water spigots, potable water is generally available at central locations within the campground, such as a hand pump. Campers are advised to bring sufficient water for their stay.
- Restroom Facilities: Pit toilets are typically available, maintaining the rustic character of the campground. These are maintained by the managing authority, though cleanliness can vary.
- Boat Launch: A significant service offered by Chase Creek Campground is its boat launch, providing direct access to the Manistee River. This feature is invaluable for those bringing canoes, kayaks, or smaller fishing boats, allowing for easy entry and exit from the water.
- Firewood: While not always sold directly on-site by the campground itself, arrangements for local firewood purchase are often made available through nearby vendors or information provided by the campground management, to prevent the spread of invasive pests.
It is important for prospective visitors to note that, given its rustic nature, Chase Creek Campground typically does not offer amenities such as electrical hookups, showers, or Wi-Fi. This contributes to the "getting away from it all" atmosphere that many campers seek.
The core features of Chase Creek Campground are intrinsically linked to the outdoor activities it facilitates, making it a prime location for various recreational pursuits.
- Fishing: With direct access to the Manistee River and Chase Creek, the campground is a haven for anglers. The Manistee River is well-known for its trout fishing, especially for brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Anglers can fish from the riverbanks, wade into the shallow areas, or launch a boat for a more extensive fishing trip.
- Paddling: The boat launch provides excellent access for canoeing and kayaking on the Manistee River. The river's calm flow makes it suitable for leisurely float trips, offering scenic views and opportunities for wildlife spotting.
- Hunting: Being surrounded by state land means direct access to vast areas for hunting. Depending on the season, hunters can pursue deer, small game, and other legal game. This feature is a significant draw for hunters seeking a basecamp in a prime hunting area.
- Hiking and Trails: The surrounding state forest lands are crisscrossed with various trails, offering opportunities for hiking and exploring. These trails can range from well-defined paths to more primitive routes, catering to different levels of hikers. The quiet nature of the campground also makes it a perfect starting point for nature walks and birdwatching.
- Snowmobiling: In the winter months, the area transforms, with snowmobile trails accessible from or near the campground, providing opportunities for winter sports enthusiasts.
- Wildlife Viewing and Photography: The undisturbed natural environment ensures abundant wildlife, making it an excellent spot for wildlife observation and photography. Deer, various bird species, and other forest animals are common sights.
The emphasis on unpowered sites contributes to a quiet and peaceful ambiance, allowing campers to truly disconnect and enjoy the sounds of nature.
Chase Creek Campground is typically promoted through state park and forest campground directories and websites, highlighting its rustic charm and access to the Manistee River. The promotional emphasis is often on the core outdoor activities available, such as fishing, paddling, hunting, and hiking. It is presented as a destination for those who appreciate primitive camping and direct access to natural resources rather than resort-style amenities.
The target audience for Chase Creek Campground includes:
- Anglers: Given its prime location on the Manistee River, it is a favored spot for fishing enthusiasts.
- Paddlers: Canoe and kayak enthusiasts seeking tranquil river floats will find the boat launch and river access ideal.
- Hunters: The surrounding state land makes it an attractive base for hunting expeditions.
- Hikers and Nature Lovers: Those who enjoy exploring wooded trails and observing wildlife in a quiet setting.
- Families and Groups: Seeking a rustic camping experience to connect with nature, often with the intent of engaging in outdoor activities.
- Budget-Conscious Campers: State forest campgrounds often offer more affordable rates compared to private RV parks with extensive amenities.
Promotional messages would likely emphasize the serenity, the beauty of the Northern Michigan wilderness, and the wealth of outdoor activities available right from the campsite. Information regarding reservations, fees, and specific regulations (such as "leave no trace" principles or restrictions on outside firewood) would be critical for potential visitors. Chase Creek Campground is a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional, nature-focused camping within the diverse offerings of the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category.

Access is by 3 miles of non maintained dirt road, but is accessible by 2wd vehicles. The campground is not maintained, therefore it is very private. The river Access is down a non maintained stairway. At the river is a small platform, but be careful in the water due to broken structures under the water.
Great place to really get away from it all! Roads are usually ok but get sloppy when it rains allot.
Nice rustic site with locations on the river. A little too close to US-131 for my tastes
Best 4th of July spot!! :-)
Nice place to camp.
