Introduction / Overview
For Nebraskans seeking a practical, highly affordable, and conveniently located place to park their RV or trailer, the Chautauqua Park Campground in Beatrice, Nebraska, offers a no-frills but functional solution. Situated on the south side of Beatrice within the expansive 80-acre historical Chautauqua Park, this municipal campground provides vital services for travelers and residents alike, operating under the management of the City of Beatrice Public Properties Department.
The primary draw for many local users is the exceptional value. With a simple, inexpensive nightly fee, guests can access sites equipped with full hookups, including water, sewer, and electric service. This level of amenity—especially the inclusion of sewer hookups at every site—at an accessible price point makes it an attractive stopover for those traveling through the state or needing a base near local shopping and attractions.
Chautauqua Park itself has deep roots in Nebraska history, once hosting Chautauqua assemblies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The park continues to be a recreational hub, featuring historic structures like the Tabernacle and large open spaces for various activities. The campground’s setting near the Big Blue River adds a natural element, appealing to those who enjoy river fishing or scenic strolls along the hike and bike trails.
However, potential guests must be aware of the campground's unique operating structure, which significantly impacts the camping experience. The campground has a limited number of total sites, and according to recent policy updates from the City of Beatrice, the majority of the sites (16 out of 20) are designated for long-term monthly stays. Only a small number of sites (four) are available for short-term stays with a maximum limit of 14 days. This policy, which allows for long-term residency, has created a living situation in much of the park that resembles a residential area, complete with customized setups like fences and dog runs. While this model fulfills a need for affordable long-term housing in the area, it has prompted some short-term visitors, especially families, to express concern over safety and the overall 'campground' atmosphere, recommending the city’s Riverside Park across town for traditional, short-term family camping.

What is Worth Choosing
Chautauqua Park Campground is an excellent choice for a specific type of user in Nebraska: the budget-conscious traveler or the long-term resident needing essential services.
The number one reason to choose Chautauqua is its outstanding value. For a simple $20 nightly fee, securing a full-hookup site with 30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer is virtually unmatched in terms of affordability and convenience. This makes it perfect for a quick, overnight stop while passing through the region or for Nebraskans needing a short-term base for a family event in Beatrice.
However, local users planning a traditional family camping vacation should manage their expectations regarding the atmosphere. Due to the City's policy designating 16 of the 20 sites for extended, monthly residency, the campground functions more as an affordable residential park for a majority of its spots rather than a typical, short-term recreational area. While the surrounding Chautauqua Park remains a beautiful and well-maintained public space with great features like the playgrounds, historic Tabernacle, and river access, the actual camping loop may lack the transient, recreational feel of a typical state park or private RV resort.
Nebraskans should choose Chautauqua Park Campground if their priority is affordability, full hookups (especially sewer), and proximity to Beatrice's city amenities. For those seeking a purely recreational family atmosphere with strict stay limits, the city's Riverside Park may be a better alternative, as it maintains more short-term sites.

Due to the city’s policy allowing for monthly stays … this area has taken a turn for the worse. There are only 2-3 sites with a 14 day limit, the rest now houses full time renters. Complete with their own dog runs fences and above ground pool. Even if there had been an open spot … for my families safety I would NOT have camped there … nor could I recommend this as a family camp site. I would direct you to the Riverside Park across town.
While visiting Beatrice, NE we made camp at the Chautauqua Park Campground which for $20/night turned out to be really nice as they have full hookups and a HUGE park to enjoy while still being close to the shopping in town.
