Checotah / Lake Eufaula West KOA Holiday Introduce
**Your Central Oklahoma Base Camp: Checotah / Lake Eufaula West KOA Holiday**
The **Checotah / Lake Eufaula West KOA Holiday** is a well-known, award-winning destination in Eastern Oklahoma, designed to serve travelers needing both **convenience and comprehensive amenities**. Strategically located right off Interstate 40, this KOA is a popular stopover for cross-country travelers and a fun-filled retreat for Oklahoma families exploring the Lake Eufaula area—Oklahoma’s largest reservoir. As a KOA Holiday, the park provides an elevated camping experience with a variety of site types and recreational activities aimed at making your stay as memorable and comfortable as possible.
The core appeal of this resort is its blend of accessibility and recreation. You can pull off the highway, be set up in a full hookup site, and immediately start enjoying amenities like the seasonal pool, nature trails, and a small barnyard zoo. However, local patrons should be aware that, like many campgrounds, the resort's services and facility conditions can fluctuate, as noted in recent customer reviews suggesting that some amenities (like the petting zoo advertised on older materials) may be subject to change or temporary closure, and office hours may be limited, particularly outside of peak summer weekends. Despite these operational considerations, the park's foundations—easy highway access, spacious sites, and extensive features—remain its strong suit, making it an excellent base for exploring Checotah and the vast recreational opportunities of Lake Eufaula.
**Location and Accessibility**
The campground boasts an ideal location for travelers, situated directly off **Interstate 40** at the **Pierce Road Exit 255**. The full address is **409329 E 1078 Rd I-40 and, Pierce Rd Exit 255, Checotah, OK 74426, USA**.
This prime position makes the KOA extremely accessible for big rigs and those looking for a quick, efficient overnight stop. Guests simply take the Pierce Road Exit 255 and proceed a short distance on the North Service Road. Its location in Checotah places it in McIntosh County, perfectly situated for accessing all the activities on **Lake Eufaula**, known for its fishing, boating, and 600 miles of shoreline. While the direct proximity to I-40 is a major convenience for access, it does mean that sites closer to the highway may experience some road noise, a common trade-off for such accessibility. Furthermore, the property is an excellent base for visiting local area attractions, including the historic M-K-T Depot in Checotah and the Fountain Head Golf Course, which is just a few miles away.

Customer Reviews
Our experience at this KOA site was very mixed. On the one hand, it is a beautiful site -- with lots of trees, nature trails, a large playground with sand for the kids to enjoy, and a staff that was super friendly and helpful. On the other hand, the place felt like it was run-down and not being staffed as it should be. Picnic tables were in poor condition and our adirondack chair broke on the first day. The website promised an onsite petting zoo, but that was no longer in operation. And we were there for 4 days - from Friday to Monday, and the front office was closed for 3 of the 4 days. They have a great game room and amenities in the front office, but it doesn't do you any good if the office is always closed. So much great potential, but it needs some love and needs better hours of access for their guests.
This was the most disappointing KoA I have ever been to. It was only an overnight stop, and it fullfilled that. We had full hookups. Problem was, we got there and the office was closed. Come to find out, the office is completely closed 2 days a week. We had planned to fill our propane, could not do that. They advertise pizza, could not get that. Never saw a single employee. It served the purpose, but was well below the standard I expect from KoA.
So Nice, We Stayed Twice! We stayed here twice since it was a halfway point for our trip, and we will likely stay again the next time we're passing through the area. The staff were very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The bathroom/shower facilities are kept very clean and well-stocked with toilet paper, hand soap, and paper towels. We stayed in the tent area, which has lots of shade. The electric and water tent sites have a wooded area right behind them. Be aware the tent sites are in the section closest to I-40 and there is loud noise from the interstate traffic throughout the night. We did not have trouble sleeping (it ended up being like a white noise effect), but we wanted to mention it since some people might have trouble. The simple cabins are in the same area. The RV sites are a little farther back. The luxury cabins are the farthest away from the interstate and closest to the wooded area and trails leading to the lake shore. Food options are limited in the Checotah area. It's at least 20 minutes one way to drive to a restaurant. There is a Hunt Brothers Pizza location in the camp store, and they make the pizzas fresh to order that taste great. The staff will even deliver it to your site. It's about $13 for a 14-inch pizza. This is a good option if you didn't bring in your own food and don't want to drive far to pick up something. They also offer a breakfast pizza, which we tried and can recommend. The store closes at 6pm, so if you aren't arriving before then, you'll need to make other plans for dinner. The store (open 8am - 6pm) has pretty much anything you might need in a pinch - which is good because, like I mentioned, it's in the middle of nowhere. There is an entertainment center with a large TV, DVD selection, indoor and outdoor games, and a small give/take a book library. There is a small petting zoo, which is worth visiting. They have a cute goat, donkey, and some geese.
We were so excited to be staying at this KOA, then we drove up. Website promotes many amenities and it’s listed as a KOA Holiday. Here’s the run down- Fishing pond is covered in moss and looks like a big oil slick is on top. No fishing for us tonight. Petting zoo is a miniature donkey, a goat, and a few geese. It’s very run down and pitiful looking. Pool is small but looks clean from afar. Patios are very nice but the way the lots are positioned. You sit on the patio and smell sewage from your neighbor. As others have mentioned, this should not be a Holiday KOA. Not even close. Lots are mowed and the patios could be nice if the smell outside wasn’t so bad. Feel very ripped off.
We have stayed at dozens of KOAs, and unfortunately this one was pretty disappointing. Not sure how it is getting such great reviews. The office was closed early when we arrived at 4:30, the trash container was overflowing, etc. The grass, what there was, was not cut. The sites and roads were very dusty…although that’s not the fault of the park. Not many options in the area, so maybe ok for a drop in overnight, but we will try to find another park next time.
