Location and Accessibility

Chevelon Crossing Campground is located near Forest Lakes Estates, AZ 85931, USA. This places it within the picturesque Coconino National Forest, an area renowned for its towering ponderosa pines, diverse wildlife, and the dramatic Mogollon Rim. Its proximity to Forest Lakes Estates makes it relatively accessible for those traveling from various parts of Arizona, yet it maintains a secluded feel that is characteristic of forest campgrounds.

Access to the campground typically involves driving on well-maintained forest roads, though conditions can vary depending on recent weather. While most vehicles can reach the campground, visitors should be prepared for unpaved sections, especially as they get closer to the camping areas. It's always a good idea to check the latest road conditions, especially after heavy rains or during the shoulder seasons, to ensure a smooth journey. The elevation in this area means cooler temperatures, especially in the evenings, offering a welcome respite from Arizona's summer heat.

Services Offered

Chevelon Crossing Campground provides a more primitive camping experience, focusing on essential facilities to maintain its natural charm. Here’s what you can generally expect:

  • Vault Toilets: The campground is equipped with clean vaulted toilets, offering basic but functional restroom facilities. This is a significant amenity for a more rustic campground, ensuring visitor comfort.
  • Designated Campsites: While some sites may be overgrown due to varying usage, there are designated areas for camping. These spots often include space for tents or RVs, though specific site features like picnic tables or fire rings may vary or be more primitive.
  • Trash Management: While a "leave no trace" philosophy is always encouraged, visitors should be prepared to pack out everything they pack in. There may be limited or no trash services, emphasizing personal responsibility for waste.
  • No Hookups: As a more primitive campground, Chevelon Crossing typically does not offer electrical, water, or sewer hookups for RVs. Campers should be prepared for dry camping.
  • No Potable Water: It is highly recommended that visitors bring their own supply of potable water, as there are generally no reliable sources of drinking water within the campground itself.
Features / Highlights

Chevelon Crossing Campground offers several distinctive features that make it a compelling choice for outdoor enthusiasts in Arizona:

  • Stunning Night Sky Views: A consistent highlight mentioned by visitors is the spectacular view of the night sky. Away from urban light pollution, the campground provides an unparalleled opportunity for stargazing, allowing campers to witness countless stars and celestial wonders.
  • Access to Trails and Off-Roading: The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding forest. As noted by a visitor, there are trails suitable for off-road vehicles like RZRs, leading to scenic spots and "nice view of the lake." This makes it ideal for those who enjoy exploring on ATVs, UTVs, or even mountain bikes.
  • Secluded and Peaceful Environment: Despite its accessibility, the campground often feels secluded due to its layout and the surrounding forest. This provides a truly peaceful retreat, ideal for those looking to disconnect and enjoy tranquility.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Being situated in a natural forest environment, the campground offers opportunities for wildlife viewing. As one reviewer experienced, encounters with local wildlife, such as a "Mt. Lion," can occur, adding an element of wilderness adventure. Visitors should always be aware of their surroundings and practice wildlife safety.
  • Scenic Forest Setting: The campground is nestled among tall pines, providing a beautiful backdrop for camping. While some areas may have fewer trees than others, the overall forest environment is a significant draw for nature lovers.
  • Proximity to Chevelon Canyon Lake: The mention of a "view of the lake" suggests that Chevelon Canyon Lake is within reasonable proximity, offering potential opportunities for fishing (with appropriate permits) or simply enjoying the water views, even if the river itself might be dry seasonally.
  • Cooler Temperatures: Due to its higher elevation, Chevelon Crossing provides a welcome escape from the intense summer heat of lower Arizona, offering cooler daytime temperatures and crisp, refreshing nights.

Found a trail that we were able to take the RZR on that took us to a nice view of the lake.

Great campground with a clean vaulted toilet. Most of the camp sites are washed out or over grown from lack of use. Spent two nights in early September could of used more tall pines for shade but great views of the night sky. River was dry this time of year and we were visited by a Mt. Lion on our second night.

The country side was beautiful but the mens bathroom was pretty nasty and a few of the sites with fire pits had garbage. People always find a way to ruin everything. Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no trace. Always, please?
