Chewuch Campground Introduce
Hello, Washington adventurers! Are you searching for a picturesque camping spot where the river flows gently beside your tent, and the natural beauty of our state surrounds you? For many of us in the Evergreen State, the Methow Valley is a beloved destination, offering a unique blend of rugged mountains, charming towns, and abundant outdoor recreation. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce you to a true gem in this region: Chewuch Campground. Situated right on the banks of the Chewuch River, this campground provides an idyllic setting for your next family getaway or peaceful retreat into nature.
Chewuch Campground offers a quintessential Washington camping experience, known for its beautiful, spacious sites and direct access to the crystal-clear Chewuch River. Visitors consistently praise its clean facilities and the serene atmosphere that makes it perfect for disconnecting and recharging. Whether you’re looking to fish, hike, explore the nearby Western-themed town of Winthrop, or simply relax by a campfire under a canopy of trees, Chewuch Campground provides a comfortable and memorable base. Despite past forest fires in the area, the campground itself remains well-maintained and beautiful, a testament to the resilience of our natural landscapes and the dedication to preserving these cherished spaces for all of us to enjoy.
Chewuch Campground is conveniently located at W Chewuch Rd, Winthrop, WA 98862, USA. This places it approximately six miles north of the charming town of Winthrop, deep within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. The Methow Valley, where Winthrop and the campground reside, is renowned for its stunning mountain vistas, Ponderosa pine forests, and the recreational opportunities offered by the Methow and Chewuch Rivers.
Accessibility to Chewuch Campground is generally good via well-maintained roads. From major population centers in Washington like Seattle or Spokane, reaching Winthrop typically involves traveling via major highways such as US-2 or I-90, then connecting to State Route 153 or, most scenically, State Route 20 (North Cascades Highway). It's important to note that SR 20 is a seasonal road, usually closed from November to late April or early May due to heavy snow over the mountain passes. Once in Winthrop, W Chewuch Rd leads directly to the campground. Reviewers mention that the campground is easily accessible for various vehicle types, including those with rooftop tents or travel trailers. Its location offers a sense of seclusion and immersion in nature while still being a short, convenient drive from the amenities of Winthrop, including restaurants and supplies. This balance makes it a highly accessible and desirable destination for a wide range of campers.
Chewuch Campground, as a US Forest Service campground, provides essential services to ensure a comfortable and environmentally responsible camping experience. It caters to both tent and RV campers, though it's important to note the distinction in services.

Family of 7 tent camped here in 4/2025 for spring break. It was cold but sunny most of the trip. We were the only humans there. Camped in spot 6 along the river. GORGEOUS spot. Lots of trees, picnic table, fire pit, vault toilet nearby. River will be fun in the summer months and fishing when open season. No animal sitings. Nearby forest is black from previous fire. We hiked Lewis Butte as a family and ate dinner in Winthrop. I would definitely come back again. Only four stars because not sure what it's like in the summer when campsite is full.
On 7/6/24 my husband and I decided to take a spur of the moment trip to a campground I frequented as a child with my family. And it did NOT disappoint. We stayed at camp 4 and it was beautiful! Just as I remembered it. The river was right at our campsite and we enjoyed a dip, we saw a moose and plenty of deer and chipmunks. The bathrooms were very clean and well stocked. We took a drive to the top and visited the firefighters memorial. I'm so happy to see this campground well maintained and beautiful after the fires. We will be frequenting more often from now on.
Friday, Sept 30, 2022 - I'm all alone in this campground. It's clean and has running water. It's in an open pine forest. It has vaulted toilets, but it's very clean probably since no one is here. It's also quiet and there are no bugs, unlike the state open field just south of here. $20 per night, or $10 for seniors. I'm at site 13 and was able to get Starlink to work on the picnic table. Very surprised by that with all the trees around. Verizon is dead here, but AT&T seems to work a little, at least at my site.
My family and I have been camping along the Chewuch river for up to 40 yrs. As the years went by and we all got older the family camping faded down due to bad health but I continue still to go there, even if I'm by myself. I camp there because it's quiet and very relaxing, away from crouded camp grounds full of annoying loud obnoxious people and city rules, and best of all it's free. 🤗
I have been going to this exact spot for the past 40 maybe 35 years I love this place it's like my home away from home we just left there two weeks ago we always go back every year when there's not a fire I love Winthrop we're trying to find property in Winthrop an the camp host Rob an Sharon are the best luv them like family they are family FAMILY... Our winthrop FAMILY...kiana straka knows what I'm talking about she is my first cousin so she knows woohoo
