Customer Reviews
I would say it's beautiful up here, but that wouldn't do the southern Dragoons justice. Let me say, it's absolutely stunning here. The rock formations are beautiful. I'm camping at the China Camp campground, and I don't have a clue how it got its name, so I'll have to do some research when I get home. There are several dispersed campsites here. The first set is on the left once you come through this rock pass, but just a little peace down the road, there is a beautiful little spot, and I highly suggest camping there. I camped at the first, but while out hiking is when I found the other site. Once I got back, I broke camp, and moved there. The road uo is pretty good, but gets a little hairy because of the rocks. I have 4-wheel drive, but didn't need it coming in. If you want to go further up the road, you'll definitely need 4-wheel drive, and good clearance.
Absolutely beautiful high mountain valley, though the old mining road to access it is definitely rocky. Don't need 4 wheel drive but you'll want fairly high clearance or you'll be scraping your undercarriage quite a bit. Definitely worth it when you make it to the top though and descend into the valley, with the ridge of rocks running along the west side. Plenty of good spots to camp in the valley and sometimes a small creek runs during periods of heavy rain. The old San Juan Mine shortly up the road from the Camp is also well worth checking out and fairly easily accessible, though you do have to either scramble up the hill to reach the upper adit or cross a somewhat sketchy wooden "bridge" to enter through the lower adit. I would like to note the correct name of this place is Gordon Camp, named after Jonathan Gordon. He was a prospector and assayer from Tombstone who staked the claim for the San Juan Mine, about half a mile up the road from the old foundations left from the mining camp. "China Camp" is a misnomer which I believe is based on the fact this valley is located just below the rather prominent China Peak.
Bring your bicycle to Middle March Road, and ride all over these mountains. Sweet ride up the forest road to the granite batholith split asunder for you to enter into the mountain's heart. Camp on the flats overlooking the plateau to the west to the Huachucas, and the Whetstones.
Spectacular 4wd road to China camp. this historical miner encampment is now a beautiful high valley that sits high in the Dragoon mountains at Cochise's Stronghold.
Great place for a quad ride & picnic
