Chippewa Landing Introduce
Chippewa Landing is a long-standing and well-regarded destination within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, particularly renowned for its exceptional integration with the natural environment of Northern Michigan. Located just north of Cadillac, Michigan, this full-service canoe livery and campground has been a cornerstone for outdoor recreation on the Manistee River for over 50 years. It offers a unique combination of rustic camping experiences and extensive opportunities for water-based activities, making it an ideal choice for individuals, families, and groups looking to immerse themselves in the region's natural beauty and diverse recreational offerings.
The environment surrounding Chippewa Landing is one of its most significant assets. Nestled in Northern Michigan, the campground is situated directly on the picturesque Manistee River. This prime location provides immediate access to the river's calm, slow-moving waters, which range in depth from approximately 1 to 15 feet. The river itself is known for its ample sandbars, offering ideal spots for swimming, picnicking, or simply relaxing during a float trip.
Beyond the river, Chippewa Landing is surrounded by thousands of acres of state land. This expansive natural setting ensures a sense of seclusion and offers a rich habitat for wildlife. The thick woods and varied terrain contribute to a "roughing it" feel for campers, while still providing necessary amenities. This vast surrounding state land opens up numerous possibilities for land-based activities such as deer hunting, small game hunting, and mushroom foraging in the spring. In the winter months, the area transforms into a haven for snowmobiling. The natural setting is also perfect for "color tours" in the fall, where the vibrant foliage creates a stunning backdrop for river trips. The commitment to environmental responsibility is evident, with practices like policing the river for litter, paying employees to be litter-conscious, and utilizing 100% solar power for the office and store area.
Chippewa Landing distinguishes itself by offering a robust array of services that cater specifically to river recreation and camping. As a full-service canoe livery, it provides:
- Equipment Rentals: Guests can rent canoes, kayaks (single and double), tubes, and rafts. This wide selection ensures that visitors can choose the perfect vessel for their desired river experience, whether it's a leisurely float or a more active paddling trip.
- Shuttle Services: A key convenience offered by Chippewa Landing is its personal shuttle service. This service transports groups upstream to various entry points on the Manistee River, allowing them to float downstream at their own pace and conclude their trip conveniently back at Chippewa Landing. This eliminates the logistical challenges often associated with river trips, making the experience seamless and enjoyable. The shuttle service is also available for locally based groups renting equipment, regardless of whether they are camping at Chippewa Landing, another local campground, or staying in a hotel or vacation rental.
- Campsites: Chippewa Landing offers both rustic and non-rustic camping options. Its main campground, Chippewa Landing, features large, secluded, grassy, and wooded sites, many within close walking distance of the river. These rustic sites provide a genuine outdoor experience, complete with fire pits, picnic tables, privies, shelters, and water access. There is no electricity at these sites, preserving the tranquil vacation setting. For those seeking more modern amenities, they also operate Oak Grove Campground, which offers full hook-ups and a bathhouse.
- Firewood Sales: Understanding the importance of a campfire to the camping experience, Chippewa Landing sells inexpensive, locally cut, and dried firewood on-site. They strongly discourage guests from bringing their own firewood to prevent the spread of pests. Large bundles are available, as well as face cords and half face cords for larger groups or longer stays.
Chippewa Landing's features extend beyond basic camping, focusing on creating an all-encompassing outdoor adventure for its visitors. The primary draw is undoubtedly the Manistee River, which serves as a natural playground for a variety of activities:
- Paddlesports: Whether it's the peaceful glide of a canoe, the agile movement of a kayak, the social fun of a raft, or the relaxing drift of a tube, the river offers options for all preferences and skill levels.
- Fishing: The Manistee River is known for its excellent fishing opportunities, particularly for trout in the spring. Campers can fish directly from a canoe or find numerous natural spots along the riverbanks.
- Swimming and Picnicking: Abundant sandbars along the river provide perfect spots for swimming and enjoying a riverside picnic, adding to the leisurely aspect of a river trip.
- Proximity to State Land: The direct access to thousands of acres of state land opens up possibilities for hunting, mushrooming, hiking, and snowmobiling, providing year-round recreational opportunities beyond water activities.
- Flexible Trip Planning: Guests have the freedom to take as long as they want on the river, allowing for extended enjoyment, picnicking, and swimming. The efficient shuttle service ensures a hassle-free return to the starting point.
The commitment to providing a natural and unspoiled camping experience is a key feature, especially with the rustic sites designed to make guests feel like they are truly "roughing it" with ample privacy and spaciousness. The presence of both rustic and modern campgrounds under the Chippewa Landing umbrella (Oak Grove) allows them to cater to a broader range of camper preferences.
Chippewa Landing promotes itself as the "first and friendliest name in camping and canoeing on the Manistee River for over 50 years," emphasizing its long-standing reputation and customer-focused service. The promotional materials highlight the natural setting and top-quality equipment, assuring a great paddlesport experience. They actively market the relaxed float trips suitable for families and groups, encouraging activities like picnicking and swimming along the way.
The campground caters to a wide audience, including families seeking a memorable outdoor vacation, groups looking for a fun and active getaway, and individual adventurers interested in fishing, hunting, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature. The availability of both rustic and full-hookup campsites suggests an appeal to both traditional campers and those who prefer more modern amenities. Their emphasis on shuttle services is a strong selling point, removing a common barrier for river trips and making the experience accessible to more people. The clear statement about selling local firewood and prohibiting outside wood demonstrates a commitment to environmental health and sustainability, which can be attractive to eco-conscious campers. While specific pricing details are typically found directly on their website or by calling, the overall presentation positions Chippewa Landing as an established and reliable provider of comprehensive outdoor recreation experiences in Northern Michigan.

Customer Reviews
I highly recommend the Missaukee Bridge to Chippewa Landing run. Very peaceful and scenic. We saw more wildlife on our trip than we did people. The team here is friendly and accommodating. I’ve never camped here but it looks like fun.
I rented a kayak here for a multi-day trip, getting dropped off at CCC bridge. I would highly recommend Chippewa Landing if you are planning a similar trip. The price was super reasonable, a driver was available to take me out the day that I wanted, and the whole process was pretty quick and easy all things considered. The Manistee sure is a beautiful river
An absolutely amazing experience. The staff at Chippewa Landing was on point, from start to the time I landed. They helped with my equipment and made the trip excellent. The views on the river were perfect! I highly recommend taking the time to drive and paddle down the river.
Nice place. Campsites are spacious and well maintained. Very friendly and helpful staff. There is a little shop, but don't expect food or many supplies. Make sure you bring the supplies and food you need. I had my own kayaks, others in our group rented some. The rentals were a little older but well maintained. They loaded my personal kayak and gear along with the rentals and took us all to the drop off point. They did charge a fee to take my personal kayak. We chose to do the 65 River mile trip over a period of three days. We spent about 5 hours on the water all three days keeping a decent pace. Beautiful area, and abundant wildlife. If you do overnight trips, be prepared. Make sure everything is waterproof. If you're in a kayak your going to get wet. All in all, it was a blast, will definitely be making it a yearly trip!
Accidentally discovered this slice of heaven last year and decided to make it our yearly vacation spot. This year we rented tubes and had them drop us off and float the 3 hours down to the landing. We also took several of the trails in the camp that are wonderfully maintained. Beautiful. Professional. Just a great place to go for peaceful rustic camping.
