🌲 Introduction / Overview: Your Escape to Authentic Northwoods Solitude
For Minnesotans who truly appreciate the quiet isolation of the state's vast northern forests, the Clara Lake Rustic Campground near Lutsen offers an unparalleled opportunity. This destination is the definition of "getting away from it all." Situated deep within the Superior National Forest, it is not a large, bustling state park but rather a secluded, intimate camping area. With only three small campsites available, this location promises peace, quiet, and a genuine connection with the wilderness.
As a 'rustic' campground managed by the US Forest Service, it operates on a minimalist principle: providing essential facilities while leaving the natural environment largely undisturbed. Critically, these sites are offered free of charge and are available on a first-come, first-served basis, making them a true hidden gem for those spontaneous or budget-conscious North Shore explorers. Visitors consistently praise the feeling of having the place to themselves, even during peak summer months, and highlight the beauty of the adjacent Clara Lake.

🗺️ Location and Accessibility: Deep in the Sawtooth Mountains
The Clara Lake Rustic Campground is located off the beaten path in the scenic area north of Lutsen, placing it within the boundaries of the expansive Superior National Forest. The official address is Clara Public Landing Rd, Lutsen, MN 55612, USA. While it is geographically close to the North Shore, its remoteness is intentional and part of its appeal. Getting there requires navigating Forest Service roads, adding to the sense of adventure.
Local user reviews offer crucial advice regarding accessibility: while Google Maps may suggest alternate routes, travelers highly recommend accessing the campground from the Caribou Trail (County Road 4) side, which is the Eastern approach from Highway 61 in Lutsen. The recommended route is to turn north onto Caribou Trail, drive approximately 8 miles to Forest Road 340 (FR 340), then turn left and follow FR 340 for about 3.5 miles. The campground is then found down a final ¾-mile entrance road. Drivers should be prepared for gravel roads typical of the National Forest system, and heed warnings about potentially rougher, impassable roads (like the Pancore Loop mentioned in a review) if approaching from the West side. This location is approximately a 30-minute drive to the popular tourist hub of Grand Marais.

🏕️ Services Offered (Rustic and Essential)
Embracing the "rustic" moniker, Clara Lake provides the core essentials for car camping but intentionally foregoes the full-service amenities found in larger State Parks. Campers must be prepared to be self-sufficient and adhere to Leave No Trace principles, especially concerning waste management.

3 small campsites within walking distance to public access for Clara Lake. Sites are in good condition and vault toilet was very clean. Had the place to ourselves during an early June visit. A couple cars came to the access point but otherwise we were alone. All 3 sites are decent for tent or small camper.
Rustic camping at its finest. The lake is beautiful. Be careful when heading to this location. Accidentally took the Pancore Loop which I think is meant for side by sides and not vehicle traffic, white knuckled and very few vehicles could probably pass through it, Come from Caribou Trail ( East) side and not the West side. Google maps said I could and before I could turn around it was too late, not the adventure I was looking for, but a story for life haha. It's a little off the beaten path, but I think that's the best part about it. Three sites here. Went in July, lots of bugs, but that's normal. Overall, the outhouse seemed in good shape and the sites were nicely spaced apart. Just over a 30 minute drive to Grand Marais. Tait river flows behind camp sites, only the last day we heard the river flowing. Next time we will check it out.
Don’t recommend this campground. There were some sketchy individuals lurking around this area. Stay safe, everyone
3 campsites and we were the only ones there! It was pretty great. From other reviews I thought the lake would be right there, but it’s like .3 miles further down the road. Pit toilet that was well maintained, but FULL of flies. Make sure to bring the bug spray!
Very private campgrounds with only 3 campsites located right by the lake access. Decent sized lake with some decent fishing as well.
