Clover Meadows Campground Introduce
For those Montanans who truly understand the spirit of "getting away from it all," Clover Meadows Campground near Ennis, Montana, represents the ultimate escape. This isn't a campground designed for luxury RVs or those seeking full hookups; rather, it’s a high-altitude, rustic, and wonderfully secluded haven where "the point of disconnecting" is fully realized. Tucked away in the vast and beautiful Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, Clover Meadows is praised for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the vibrant display of wildflowers along the famous Gravelly Range Road. It offers a genuine opportunity to immerse oneself in the raw, untouched wilderness of Montana, providing a serene backdrop for those willing to venture off the beaten path. If your idea of a perfect getaway involves breathtaking views, challenging hikes, and a complete break from modern distractions, Clover Meadows Campground awaits your adventurous spirit.
Clover Meadows Campground is located at US Frst Service Rd 100, Ennis, MT 59729, USA. This places it deep within the Gravelly Range, a sub-range of the Rocky Mountains, and part of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Its elevation, often cited around 8,430 to 9,500 feet, contributes significantly to its unique appeal and challenging accessibility.
Accessing Clover Meadows requires navigating the renowned Gravelly Range Road. While this road offers "a spectacular display of wildflowers" and incredible scenery, it is also described as "rather tough." While it might be possible to manage "without 4WD, barely," it's highly recommended to use a high-clearance vehicle, and 4x4 is often preferred, especially depending on recent weather conditions. The journey itself is an adventure, taking you through remote, high-alpine meadows.
Directions typically involve traveling southwest from Ennis on Highway 287 for about 1.5 miles, then turning south onto Varney Road and continuing for approximately 10 miles. From there, take Call Road 292 southwest for about 12 miles, and then turn onto Gravelly Range Road, continuing south for roughly 8 miles to reach the campground. This remoteness means "no cell service for an hours drive in any direction," which for many, is precisely the point of visiting. This deliberate inaccessibility ensures that those who make the journey are truly committed to disconnecting and experiencing the untouched beauty of the Montana high country.
Clover Meadows Campground is characterized by its rustic and primitive nature, aligning with the desire for a true "disconnecting" experience. While it doesn't boast modern amenities, it provides essential comforts for a fundamental camping trip:
- Dispersed Campsites: The area offers a number of possible dispersed campsites, providing a more individual and less structured camping experience compared to traditional developed campgrounds. There are approximately 10 designated sites.
- No Fee: One of the most attractive services is that Clover Meadows is a no-fee campground, making it an incredibly budget-friendly option for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Picnic Tables: Each designated site is equipped with a picnic table, offering a convenient surface for dining or camp activities.
- Fire Rings: Established fire pits or fire rings are available at each site, allowing for campfires (contingent on fire restrictions) and outdoor cooking.
- Vault Toilets: Basic restroom facilities are provided in the form of vault toilets, often described as "simple" but present.
- No Potable Water: Campers must come fully prepared with their own water supply, as no drinking water is provided at the campground. Any water from natural sources in the area must be treated.
- No Garbage Service: It operates on a strict "pack out what you pack in" policy for trash, as no garbage receptacles are available on-site.
- No Electricity or Hookups: There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, emphasizing a truly primitive camping experience.
- Food and Refuse Storage Requirements: Due to wildlife presence (including bears), strict food and refuse storage requirements are in effect and enforced. Campers must secure all attractants.
- Stay Limit: A stay limit of 16 accumulated days within any 30-day period is enforced across the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, including Clover Meadows.
- Unparalleled Seclusion and Disconnection: The primary highlight is the profound sense of seclusion and the complete lack of cell service. This allows for a genuine disconnect from daily life and a deep immersion in nature, which is a major draw for many Montanans.
- Stunning High-Altitude Scenery: Located at over 8,400 feet, the campground and the surrounding Gravelly Range offer "spectacular display of wildflowers blooming in a short but vibrant burst of color" during the summer months. The panoramic views are consistently described as breathtaking.
- Access to Black Butte: For the adventurous, Clover Meadows is a direct gateway to the "extremely strenuous hike (and scramble on the steep stuff)" to the top of Black Butte. This challenging ascent rewards hikers with even more expansive views.
- Challenging yet Rewarding Access: While the Gravelly Range Road can be "tough" and often requires 4WD or high clearance, the journey itself is part of the adventure, leading to a truly pristine destination that feels earned.
- Wildlife Abundance: The area is teeming with wildlife. While moose and an "massive amount of mosquitoes" are specifically mentioned, the remote nature of the Gravelly Range also means potential encounters with larger fauna like bears, necessitating proper precautions.
- Photography Paradise: Visitors are encouraged to "bring a camera" due to the incredibly picturesque landscapes, from alpine meadows filled with wildflowers to sweeping mountain vistas.
- Rustic, Authentic Camping: For those who appreciate a no-frills, authentic backcountry camping experience, the primitive nature of Clover Meadows is a major draw. It's about self-reliance and raw natural beauty.
- Proximity to Ennis Activities: Despite its remoteness, it's still within a reasonable drive of Ennis, offering access to its charm and fly-fishing opportunities on the Madison River.

For Montana locals, Clover Meadows Campground isn't just a place to camp; it's an embodiment of the rugged, untamed beauty that defines their home state. For those who truly value solitude and a complete break from the digital world, the "no cell service for an hours drive in any direction" is less a deterrent and more an invitation to genuinely disconnect. This level of seclusion, coupled with the challenging yet rewarding drive up the Gravelly Range Road, offers an authentic adventure that resonates deeply with the independent spirit of Montanans.
Locals understand the beauty of high-altitude alpine environments, and the "spectacular display of wildflowers" mentioned by reviewers is a familiar and cherished sight during Montana's short, vibrant summers. The opportunity to tackle strenuous hikes like the one to Black Butte provides a physical and mental challenge that many Montanans embrace as part of their outdoor lifestyle. While the "massive amount of mosquitoes" and the need for bear awareness are real considerations, these are often seen as part of the raw, unfiltered experience of the Montana wilderness that locals are accustomed to navigating.
The fact that it's a no-fee, primitive campground makes it incredibly appealing for budget-conscious residents seeking genuine backcountry experiences without commercialization. It’s a place where self-reliance is key, and the rewards are immeasurable: unparalleled views, profound quiet, and a deep connection to the land. Clover Meadows Campground offers Montanans a chance to truly step away from the everyday and rediscover the wild heart of their state, proving that sometimes, the lack of amenities is precisely the point.

Customer Reviews
The campground doesn't offer any amenities, but that is the point of disconnecting. The Gravely Range Road is amazing. At over 9500' the road offers a spectacular display of wildflowers blooming in a short but vibrant burst of color. A short but extremely strenuous hike (and scramble on the steep stuff) will take you to the top of Black Butte, but beware of high altitude and the massive amount of mosquitoes, coupled with no cell service for an hours drive in any direction. Bring a camera.
What a beautiful little campground. The scene up to it and beyond is so worth seeing. The road is rather tough. You can do without 4WD, barely, so why risk it?
Worth the long drive for beautiful landscapes and scenery. In four days saw elk, deer, moose, a wolf and a grizzly. Lots of downed wood, but it had rained a lot recently so it was hard to find useable firewood in late August.
Rough rough road! But so with it
For Forest service Campground it was very disappointing. No Vault toilets no fire rings no defined camping areas very unorganized
