Coconino National Forest Dispersed Camping Area #2 Introduce
Coconino National Forest Dispersed Camping Area #2 offers a unique opportunity to experience the stunning natural beauty of Sedona, Arizona, while enjoying the freedom of dispersed camping. Located on Forest Road 525, this area is a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate seclusion and breathtaking landscapes. Nestled among the red rocks, this camping spot provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and connect with nature.
Dispersed camping means that campers are spread out across the area, allowing for a more secluded experience compared to traditional campgrounds. This makes it an ideal choice for visitors who enjoy privacy and want to immerse themselves in the wilderness. The area is popular among recreational vehicle (RV) owners, especially those with larger rigs like 5th-wheel trailers, as there are plenty of spaces to park. However, due to the popularity of the location, it's advisable to arrive early or mid-week to secure a spot and avoid the busiest times.
One of the standout features of Coconino National Forest Dispersed Camping Area #2 is its proximity to Sedona's famous red rock formations. The area offers ample opportunities for hiking, with numerous trails that lead to stunning viewpoints and scenic vistas. Visitors can explore iconic trails like those leading to Devil’s Thumb or other nearby attractions, providing a true outdoor adventure. The combination of natural beauty and outdoor activities makes this camping spot a favorite among nature lovers.
While the area is remote, it still provides basic amenities to make your stay comfortable. Campers can expect access to fire pits for cooking and campfires, as well as portable toilets. However, there are no hookups or electricity available, so generators may be necessary for RVs. The drive to the camping area is on a rough road, which can be slow but adds to the charm of this off-the-beaten-path location.
Customer feedback highlights the beauty and tranquility of the area, with many visitors returning multiple times. However, some note that while the area is outstanding, it can become crowded quickly, especially during peak seasons. They recommend arriving early in the morning or mid-week to avoid the busiest times. Additionally, reviews mention the drive-in experience on Forest Road 525, which can be slow due to its rough condition and occasional traffic from off-highway vehicles (OHVs). For those sensitive to noise and dust, it’s worth considering visiting during less busy times of the year or avoiding periods when OHV activity is high.
It's also important to note that Sedona West no longer offers dispersed camping; instead, there are now designated camping areas on Forest Road RD 525. These include Nolan, Greasy Spoon, Cockscomb, Windmill, and Surprise, which are closer to Highway 89A. This means visitors should familiarize themselves with the specific regulations and locations of these areas to ensure they have a smooth experience.
Overall, Coconino National Forest Dispersed Camping Area #2 is a fantastic choice for those seeking an authentic outdoor experience in one of Arizona's most beautiful regions. Whether you're hiking the trails, enjoying the serene landscape, or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings, this camping spot offers something for everyone who loves nature and adventure.

Customer Reviews
This is an AMAZING area to boondock in, red rock is beautiful. You need to hike some of the great trails to get up close. Have been here 3 times now. This area is outstanding but everyone knows that, so for future return visits we will come earlier in the year when there are fewer people. We are camping here now with our 36 ft 5th wheel RV. Plenty of places to park, but can get crowded very fast. We try to get here in the middle of the week and arrive in the morning when others have left. The drive in was slow due to rough road, but just went slow. Traffic from OHV's is loud, dusty if you are down wind. Sedona West no longer has dispersed camping, it is now called designated camping. There are 5 designated areas on FR RD 525, Nolan, Greasy Spoon, Cockscomb, Windmill and Suprise which are closer to HWY 89A.
