Coffee Pot landing campsite Introduce
**Introduction / Overview: A True Wilderness Stop on the Great River**
For adventurous Minnesota paddlers and campers who seek an authentic, rustic experience on the **Mississippi River Headwaters Water Trail**, **Coffee Pot Landing** is a well-known and highly valued layover point. Located approximately 15 river miles downstream from the Headwaters at Itasca State Park, this is a **primitive campsite and canoe landing** that offers a welcome sight to those completing a challenging day of paddling. It is managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and importantly, it is often a **free, first-come, first-served** destination.
Coffee Pot Landing is not a developed campground with modern amenities; instead, it provides essential, rustic features designed for the wilderness traveler. The setting is beautiful, situated along a **wild and scenic section of the Mississippi River** that meanders through pine-topped bluffs and wetlands. This stretch of the river, while stunning, requires preparation. As one review notes, the paddle can be long and challenging, with **"lots of rocks, turns, downed trees, leeches, and one short portage,"** making it **"Good for the adventurous"** but potentially "Lethal in the spring, with cold water and quick currents." Visitors appreciate the tranquility and natural setting, though they are reminded that it’s a shared wilderness—one review mentioned active ATV traffic on a trail behind the shelters. This spot is a quintessential Northwoods experience: rugged, beautiful, and rewarding for the prepared Minnesota outdoors enthusiast.

**What is Worth Choosing: Adventure and Rustic Solitude**
For the Minnesota camper, choosing **Coffee Pot Landing** is about selecting an **authentic, challenging, and deeply rewarding wilderness experience**. It’s supremely worth choosing for two main reasons. First, it offers a **unique and free layover** on the celebrated **Mississippi Headwaters Water Trail**. For those committed to the multi-day canoe journey, this site provides a necessary and scenic stop, often considered one of the "nicer ones" in the primitive stretch due to its amenities.
Second, despite its primitive nature, the inclusion of **Adirondack shelters**, picnic tables, and fire rings makes it significantly more accommodating than pure dispersed camping. It's a place for the **"adventurous"**—those who appreciate a truly wild setting, the beauty of the tall pines, and the knowledge that they are camping along the nascent path of a world-famous river. While it demands self-sufficiency, Coffee Pot Landing provides the perfect, tranquil setting for reflection and rest after a tough day on the water, solidifying its place as an essential stop for Minnesota’s committed paddlers.

Beautiful camp and a welcome sight after a very tough day 1 in the headwaters. Only issue I had in May 2021 was the atv trail that runs behind the two shelters was very active. However, like everyone I met in Minnesota they were all very friendly.
We attempted to canoe and kayak from gulsvig landing to coffee pot landing. Plan on 8-9 hours. Bring a hatchet, water, sunscreen. Lots of rocks, turns, downed trees, leeches, and one short portage. Good for the adventurous. Lethal in the spring, with cold water and quick currents. Not great for young kids. Beautiful, though.
Paddled source to sea in 2014, stayed here night one. Had no idea the northern headwaters area had all these campgrounds with shelters. We were in paradise. Left August 28th and had no one else in the campsite. Absolutely one of the most gorgeous days of paddling I’ve ever experienced.
Good stop when paddling from headwaters. Has outhouse and shelters. No water. Easy access to road. Two launch areas.
