Connors Lake State Campground Introduce

🌲 Welcome to Connors Lake State Campground: A Classic Northwoods Getaway

For Wisconsin residents seeking that perfect balance between a rustic outdoor experience and the convenience of modern amenities, the Connors Lake State Campground is an outstanding choice. Tucked within the sprawling beauty of the Flambeau River State Forest, this campground offers a true slice of Northern Wisconsin life, complete with towering pines, abundant wildlife, and access to a beautiful 410-acre lake. It’s an ideal destination for families, anglers, and hikers who want to disconnect while still having a few comforts close at hand.

As local users know, this area is a haven for outdoor activity. While it offers a more structured campground feel than some of the purely primitive sites in the forest, it provides a well-loved base camp for exploring the surrounding wilderness. The sites are generally large, wooded, and well-spaced, offering a good degree of privacy. Customers praise the practical features, such as the heavy-duty, adjustable grills on the fire pits—a small detail that makes a big difference when cooking over an open fire. Visitors also appreciate the quality of the vault toilets, which are often described as being exceptionally clean, adding comfort to the traditional camping experience.

It's important to note the campground can be popular, particularly on holiday weekends like Labor Day, when noise and generator use can be more noticeable. However, for most of the season, Connors Lake is known for its peaceful, serene atmosphere, providing the perfect backdrop for a relaxing vacation.

📍 Location and Accessibility

Connors Lake State Campground is strategically located within the Flambeau River State Forest in north-central Wisconsin, a region renowned for its pristine lakes, rivers, and extensive trail systems. The campground itself is situated directly on the shore of the beautiful 410-acre Connors Lake.

The address for the campground is 2927n Co Hwy M, Loretta, WI 54896, USA. While the official mailing address is Loretta, the campground is often associated with the nearby town of Winter, WI, which is home to the Flambeau River State Forest Headquarters. The campground is easily accessible by vehicle via County Highway M. Visitors should be aware that the headquarters, which offers additional services like showers, is located approximately three to five miles away on County Road W.

For adventurers, the location offers seamless access to forest roads and trails, making it a popular hub for hiking, biking, ATV use, and easy travel to the Flambeau River for paddling. Like many areas in the Northwoods, while the setting is beautiful, cell service can be spotty or poor, encouraging a true digital detox. It’s wise to download any necessary maps or information before your arrival.

🛠️ Services Offered

Connors Lake State Campground provides a mix of rustic charm and essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay in the wilderness. The facilities are managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

  • Campsites: The campground features 29 total reservable sites. Uniquely for a rustic state forest campground, it offers a limited number of electric sites (typically Sites 7, 9, 10, and 11) alongside its non-electric options, accommodating both tent and RV/trailer campers (back-in only). Each site includes a picnic table and a quality metal fire ring with a heavy-duty, adjustable cooking grill.
  • Toilets: There are two vault toilet buildings available on site. Customers consistently praise these facilities for being very clean and well-maintained.
  • Water: Drinking water is accessible via a hand pump.
  • Showers: There are no showers directly within the campground. However, free and clean showers are available for campers at the Flambeau River State Forest Headquarters, located a short 3-5 mile drive away on County Road W.
  • Waste Disposal: A dedicated garbage and recycling station is provided for the convenience of registered campers.
  • Firewood: Firewood is not sold at the campground. Campers must purchase wood from local vendors (within a 10-mile radius) or gather dead and down wood from the forest floor, strictly adhering to all Wisconsin DNR regulations to prevent the spread of forest pests.
  • ADA Accessibility: The campground includes two ADA-designated sites, ensuring accessibility for all visitors.

🌟 Features / Highlights

The primary draw of Connors Lake is its diverse offering of recreational activities, centered around its gorgeous lake and surrounding forest:

  • Extensive Trail Network: The campground is a gateway to the Flambeau River State Forest's vast trail system. This includes a short, scenic 0.3-mile nature trail near the campground, as well as connections to miles of forest roads and trails for hiking, mountain biking, and ATV riding (on designated routes).
  • Flexible Camping Options: The rare inclusion of electric hookups on a few sites makes Connors Lake particularly appealing to RV and trailer campers who want essential power without sacrificing the wooded, state forest atmosphere. It provides an excellent option for extended stays or for medical needs.

Would have been awesome minus the loud neighbors, generators, campers leaving bright lights on all night, and fireworks (labor day weekend). Water was a bit brown. Showers at the headquarters (3 or so miles) away were free and really nice. Lots of trails and forrest roads in the area.

Great camp ground. Fire pits are wonderful. Love the heavy duty grills that flip back off the fire and have adjustable height. Vault toilets were in a finished building so were almost as good as flushies. Bring bug spray because the mosquitoes are voracious. Also, lots of gravel in the spaces so bring a footprint or tarp for under your tent. I'd love to visit again.

Nice and quiet campground. Sites 1-4 are farther away and more secluded from the other sites. We were on site 1. It could fit two 10- person tents & still have lots of room. Mosquitos were really bad. Drenched in repellent and still didn't help. Beach area by campground not that great, but there's a beach area about 6 mins away, same lake and better beach.

Love this place. Great escape to the Northwoods that is made even better with a boat. Plenty of campsites available and some offer great privacy.

One of the most beautiful state campgrounds I’ve stayed in. It’s the true north woods experience. Large, wooded sites. Secluded from neighbors. Great beaches, fishing. It’s our yearly go to CG. Only 7 electric sites right now. They book up fast! There’s talk of adding more. Site 7 has a lake view with electric. Perfect
