I spent 2 nights and 3 days here in February 2025 during a warm snap. It was very quiet and most enjoyable in the morning before the wind picked up. The nights were calm and cool with an unimpeded view of the stars and planets in the dark night sky. I saw only birds but could hear other creatures calling in the distance. I was disappointed at the trash left by others so I spent some time picking up trash that I brought out to dispose of. Don't litter or these free camping options will be shut down. Prepare to pack out your trash. The toilet paper left clinging to the mesquite bushes was disgusting and unappreciated. There's a vault toilet to dispose of that before you leave. It was gross. Pack it out.
Wide open spot. It got a tad crowded on a Friday night. It was very quiet overnight. The view of the milkyway is stunning even without a telescope. This is a dark sky campground, but lots of people disregarded that: lots of fires were in the fire pits after dark, especially in the picnic area (mostly used by tenters).
I went thru the official campground to park away from other campers. I believe there's 6 "official" campsites close to the vault toilet. Lots of nice sites immediately off the highway to your left, n plenty past the cattle guard at the bk side of the campground. Previously used areas all have a rock fire ring. I walked up the road quite a ways. I wouldn't suggest anything larger than maybe a 25'. Cars, vans, B's n tents, no problem. Durt n rock road. Surprisingly good Verizon, 3-4 bars. My site was completely level, but I'm pulling a 13' Scamp. We had a full moon the night I got here, so very little in the way of stars. Beautiful views! Quiet, except when the cattle got close to the campground, a group of kids went nuts. Evidence of javalinas being around. No trash, no water. Come prepared. I'm definately keeping this location.
I love Cosmic Campground. With the nasty weather right now we are the only ones here back in our favorite campsite. The restrooms are always clean. Bring your own water though, there isn't any here.
Cosmic Campground was waaay cooler than what I expected. I watched a lot of YouTube videos before we came and none of them did justice to the actual experience of being there. We stayed right outside the actual campground since it was pretty busy Memorial Day weekend. Although the moon was really bright, we were lucky enough to see the Starlink two nights in a row and it was AMAZING. I liked how the campground is ringed by mountains and it gives the sky this cool dome effect, feels like you’re at a planetarium. We also took a day trip to the Catwalk and that was totally worth it, as well!
