Despite the rough access road, guests consistently praise the campground for its beautiful setting, excellent fishing opportunities, and friendly atmosphere. The recent construction of a new bridge has also improved access to the campground, eliminating a previously problematic flooded section of pavement. Cottonwood Campground is ideal for those who prioritize fishing and enjoying nature, and who do not mind a bit of a bumpy ride to get there.

Wonderful location if you want to spend time fishing for trout. The road to get to this campground is terrible but once here it’s wonderful. Wild turkey wondering around as well as mule deer. Camp hostess was very helpful and friendly.
Beautiful campground with electric and water hookups. Sites are nicely spaced for privacy and ample space. Single loop with two restrooms at each end. Running water/flush toilets in the restrooms, but no shower facilities. Fisherman's delight! This campground sits right on the quality waters of the San Juan River, with great trails along the river. The road leading out to this campground off of Hwy 173 is unpaved, washboard, oil field road for the first mile and a half. About a mile before campground entrance is paved, and thankfully, the State has finally built a new bridge eliminating the old washed out, constantly flooded section of pavement.
This place is gorgeous! Lots of trees and shade for half of the sites. Sites 20-27 have the most shade. Easy access to the river via lots of trails and paths. We were here in late October and stayed in site 27. Easy to get level. Completely shaded. Each site has water and electricity (20 and 30 amp). No sewer, but a nice level dump station. Definitely coming back.
Great out of the way campground. Pros - quiet, electric/water hook ups, covered picnic table on cement pad. Friendly campers. If you want to fish, this place is only a short walk to the River. Cons - dirt road onto park needed some serious grading, lots of washouts. Sites need gardening - lots of weeds, especially stickers (goat heads). Our poor dog refused to leave the trailer as the stickers were in her paws. Side note - 550 Brewing in Aztec is worth the drive.
Beautiful campground along the San Jaun River below Navajo Dam Peaceful serene campsite #35 is back in then your surrounded by shrubs so its more secluded than across the road from it. I loved the covered picnic table at each site. Surrounded by beautiful Mesas. Little to no cell service we drove the 1.5 miles out closer to 4280 in order to get service. 1.5 dirt road 4280 off of 173 to campground. There are a flock of wild turkeys 10-12 that roam the park. Our last night here a blonde black hear came off the ridge behind us and came through the site behind us, crossed the road and hit the dumpers at the entrance! Lol Would stay here again!
