Cottonwood Group Campground Introduce

Cottonwood Group Campground is a specialized camping area within Joshua Tree National Park, designed specifically for group camping. Located in the southern part of the park, near the main Cottonwood Campground, this area offers a unique and secluded camping experience for larger groups.

Environment: Like the main Cottonwood Campground, the group campground is situated in the Colorado Desert, characterized by distinct desert vegetation such as cottonwood trees, ocotillo, and various cacti. The surrounding landscape offers stunning views and opportunities for exploring the park's diverse flora and fauna. The area is also known for its excellent stargazing opportunities due to minimal light pollution. Keep in mind that due to its lower elevation, Cottonwood Group Campground tends to be warmer than other campgrounds in Joshua Tree, especially during the summer.

Services and Facilities: Cottonwood Group Campground is designed for group camping and offers specific amenities to accommodate larger groups:

  • Three individual group campsites, each with a picnic shelter
  • Each campsite can accommodate a large number of people (check specific site capacities when booking)
  • Fire rings at each campsite
  • Flush toilets are available nearby
  • Potable water is available
  • Designated parking areas (no overflow parking)

It's important to note that Cottonwood Group Campground is tent-only; RVs and trailers are prohibited. There are no individual hookups for water, electricity, or sewer at the campsites.

Activities and Features: Group campers at Cottonwood Group Campground can enjoy the same activities and features as visitors to the main Cottonwood Campground, including:

  • Hiking: Access to nearby hiking trails, such as the Cottonwood Spring Trail, which is excellent for birdwatching and wildflower viewing.
  • Stargazing: The dark night skies make Cottonwood Group Campground an ideal location for stargazing.
  • Birdwatching: The area is home to a variety of bird species.
  • Wildflower Viewing: During spring, the desert landscape is adorned with colorful wildflowers.

Campground Promotion Information:

  • Cottonwood Group Campground is a reservation-only campground. Reservations can be made online through Recreation.gov.
  • Given its popularity and limited availability, especially during peak seasons (spring and fall), it's crucial to book reservations well in advance.
  • There is a fee for camping at Cottonwood Group Campground.
  • Quiet hours are enforced from 10 PM to 6 AM.
  • Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash at all times.
  • Campfires are permitted only in designated fire rings.

Large, spacious, and somewhat private group campsites. Each site is large enough for around a dozen tents scattered among the shrubs. There's a large picnic area with an overhang, a water pump, and a firepit. A berm and nearby hills protect you from the wind. Be vigilant of mice.

We stayed in group site number one which had four picnic tables under an awning, a pump for getting water right nearby, and a big fire ring with a grille that can be folded over on top of your coals. There was plenty of space for tents.

While this campground is far from all the climbing in the park, it offers a more quiet and relaxed park experience. There are actually some trad climbing and bouldering nearby this campground but you just have to explore a little to get to them.

This is not the correct address for the Cottonwood group campground. The campground is located south of the park near Cottonwood Visitor Center.
