Customer Reviews
I went camping here on October 9 for three days. The campground is nice and although it was busy, the sites have some degree of privacy. The out houses were very clean. (water was turned off the previous day) and actually had sanitizer and a hook to hang clothes on! It cost eight dollars a day to camp, and there are no reservations. There are interesting sites to see in the park although the tree moulds were somewhat disappointing. The rest of the park was very unusual and beautiful. it gets very dark at night with lots of stars. There is some road noise from the nearby highway, but then there will be plenty of time for peace and quiet when visiting hours are over (in all our futures 😄)
Here are some pictures of the campsite. It is right at the entrance across from the Visitors center (which is open). We did not stay here but here is some current info and pictures. There is currently no water at the campgrounds. It is fascinating landscape and geology but I can’t imagine that tents would be very comfortable. It is $8 to rent a campsite or $4 for seniors so it’s a good price.
Absolutely amazing camp ground. This unique spot is a must. Located just off the highway this National treasure is just that a treasure. Camp amongst the earthen eruptions
Fantastic place to camp, we watched shooting stars all night, and you can easily see the milky way. The ground is the color of coffee grounds, and it is like opal colored volcanic glass, with beautiful green particles. There are petrified logs amongst the lava flows, and there are deep underground lava tubes you can explore. Such a fantastic place! Using the imagination, it cold be like camping on the moon! Go there, you WONT be disappointed!
For an area with few trees, this group campground is a bit of an oasis! It comes with a few tables, large grill for charcoal briquettes (useful when no fires are allowed), water, bear boxes, and a well maintained out house. There are several spots for hammocks near the campsite and plenty of room for tents. It was pretty windy the first day we were here, so be cautious about using an EZ-Up. The wind blew ours away in the first 20 minutes! It's a great place for stargazing and only a minute or two from the Craters of the Moon visitor center. It's a great stop!
