The absolutely most cozy cottage, with the extra surprise of having it decorated for Christmas . A beautiful 'snowman themed ' tree ( how could they know snowmen were my favorite?) Breakfast at the DuPont lodge was incredible. The lodge is so beautiful and decorated for Christmastime it looked amazing. Our server was wonderful, and having it be a full choice, cooked to order , all you can eat breakfast was a huge surprise, the biggest waffles and pancakes we've ever had (puts IHOP in 2nd place) 100x better than the continental breakfast we were expecting. Loved the menu choices. The food was incredibly delicious, shout out to the cook. This family vacation was made more magical by a surprise snowstorm , and seeing the falls was breathtakingly beautiful. Best family trip in many years.
The person in the front desk had no personally. She seemed soneone not really trained to help guests in any way not even to greet them. Too bad because the park is amazing. The Trails are incredible
Absolutely awesome place to spend time with the family. Took my oldest 3 camping for 2 days out here. Hiked the Cumberland falls to dog slaughter falls and then to the lookout tower. Was an awesome experience. I highly suggest using the alltrails app if you can. All the hikes were marked on there and can keep you going the right way with the possible downed trees on some of the paths from recent storms. The campgrounds were awesome and they have showers as well as a small store close by. Water and power can be accessed as well in most of the tent areas. We will definitely be returning later this year to hike the eagle falls!
3 stars= 1 for affordability, 1 for peaceful natural wooded scenery and proximity to trails, 1 for cleanliness of grounds and bathrooms. There's multiple shower stalls. We had nice hot and strong water pressure. There's 2 family bathrooms with toilet/ shower combo &handicap accessible (it was a lifesaver with an infant). There's also a full men's and women's bathroom with several toilet stalls and a couple of showers as well. Travel Trailers BEWARE. We have a 19-foot TT with 1 slide out, and this campground would be a nightmare to navigate had it been full when we stayed there. We stayed at site 22 on the Ridge side (by the camp store). Thankfully the 2 sites directly across from us were empty so we were able make the tight turns to back in and pull out from our site upon arrival and departure (we had to drive into the other camp sites to make the turn possible). My husband said that if the campground were full, site 21 would be the best option for backing in. There are a handful of non-shaded pull through sites at the front of the campground next to the dump station, camp store, and bathrooms if you have a slightly larger RV. The rest of the RV sites on the main row are back-in and situated directly across from each other on a one lane road with a roundabout at the end (in the middle of the round about is the playground). The easiest sites to maneuver would be the pull through sites and the ones near the round about. Every 2 sites also share power and water hookup with each other located on a single pole stand (with 2 30 Amp outlets and 2 110 outlets) with water spikets as well at the same location as electric. This was a challenge because the sites differ in size and distance from each other, and the hookup is somewhere in the middle of the 2 sites. It was not on the correct side that we needed for our travel trailer once we backed in. We had to use a 25 ft extension cord plus a 25 ft power cord and a 50-foot hose to reach since the hookup was on the opposite side. All sites have gravel with picnic table and fire ring and asphalt for the RV. As some others have mentioned, there are also trees at several sites to navigate between while backing in, but we didn't have an issue since the sites across from ours were empty and allowed us to position properly. We'd suggest 22ft rigs or less at the back in sites, whether Travel Trailers, Pop-up Tent trailers, or Camper Van (otherwise book the pull through site to be safe). Tent camping would be ideal here with the shade, size of sites, and access to water/ electricity, bathrooms, small store.
Firewood PSA: The wood bundles are $8.25 each and wrapped tightly in plastic. There was visible moisture due to humidity in all the bundles when I arrived, but I got two bundles anyway. It ended up raining the first night so the wood stayed in the car. I left it in the plastic under the picnic table the next day while we were hiking so it wouldn't get soaked if it rained. Well, it didn't rain but the wood never got dry. No matter how small I chopped it up, it took my air pump to get a flame going, and then it wouldn't stay lit. They need to wrap the wood in mesh so it can breathe. My advice is to stay away from the state park firewood when it's been really humid and get it somewhere else on the way in to make sure you have a good fire. To the camping! We stayed at the Clifty portion of the campground at Site 49, which was very secluded from the other sites. The privacy was great, but it is slopped with a small flat area at the bottom. We fit our four person tent easily, and you could maybe fit a small tent in another area. It's also very sandy. The wind picked up right after we set up the tent and the sand was unpleasant blowing across your feet/shins. The park doesn't have pictures of these sites so I snapped a few to show everyone. Site 48, 49, and 50 do not have electric and we paid about $30 a night to stay on an August weekend. As of August 2023, the bathhouse is "under renovation" but it honestly looks like they aren't doing anything to it so it's probably in need of significant repairs. You can go to the main camping area (Ridgeline) to take a shower which is less than a five minute drive. Otherwise, they have port-a-potties for bathrooms on site at Clifty. Also, the pool, which essentially shares a parking lot with the campground, was closed on a Saturday. However, if it is open, you can obtain a free pool pass if you're camping. Overall, it's a nice area and a short drive to the falls, or less than a mile to hike there (there are a couple trailheads that start at Clifty). If staying at sites 40-47, they are very close together, as shown in the pictures, so if you want to be secluded, 48-50 are better suited for you, but you do give up electricity. You can also make a short walk across the road to the lodge where there is more hiking and a restaurant and some outdoor activities. Also worth noting, Verizon has great coverage at the campground. We weren't able to get any WiFi coverage at site 49, so your results may vary at the other sites.
