Cypress Knee Camp Site is strategically located within the expansive Camp Trevor Rees-Jones, an established and well-regarded facility situated in Athens, Texas. The official address is Camp Trevor Rees - Jones, Athens, TX 75751, USA. This placement offers campers the advantage of being part of a larger, managed property while still enjoying the rustic appeal of a dedicated campsite. Athens, Texas, itself is a charming East Texas town, known for its friendly atmosphere and proximity to several natural attractions, making it a desirable destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
For Texans traveling from major metropolitan areas, Athens is generally accessible via well-maintained state highways. From Dallas, the drive is typically less than two hours, making it a viable option for a weekend trip. From Houston, the journey is longer but still manageable, usually around three to four hours, offering a great incentive for a more extended stay. The accessibility of Cypress Knee Camp Site is a significant advantage for local users, reducing travel time and allowing for more time to enjoy the natural surroundings.
Once you arrive at Camp Trevor Rees-Jones, signage will direct you to Cypress Knee Camp Site. It's important to note that the site's accessibility can be influenced by weather conditions. According to customer reviews, while the location is excellent in dry weather, significant rainfall can transform the site into a "mud pit." The ground, being a mix of sand and clay, can become "squishy quicksand-like material," posing challenges for vehicles and potentially leading to messy conditions. Therefore, checking weather forecasts before your trip is highly recommended, especially if you plan to visit during periods prone to rain. This proactive approach will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable arrival and stay, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty of this Texas campsite.
When planning your stay at Cypress Knee Camp Site, understanding the available services is crucial for a comfortable and prepared experience. While the site emphasizes a more traditional camping feel, it benefits from its proximity to amenities within the larger Camp Trevor Rees-Jones facility. Based on available public information and customer feedback, here's what you can generally expect:
- Access to Full Bathrooms: Campers at Cypress Knee Camp Site benefit from close proximity to full bathrooms located within the broader Camp Trevor Rees-Jones area. This is a significant convenience, offering more comprehensive facilities than a typical primitive campsite. Users have specifically mentioned being "near the full bathrooms," indicating a relatively easy walk or short drive to these amenities.
- Proximity to Pavilions: The site is also noted to be near "two pavilions." These structures can be invaluable for group gatherings, shaded areas for meals, or a place to take shelter during light rain, enhancing the overall functionality of your camping experience.
- Fishing Access: A major draw for many campers, Cypress Knee Camp Site offers "access to bathrooms and bridge on both sides for fishing." This suggests that anglers will find convenient spots to cast a line, adding a recreational activity to their stay. The presence of bridges on both sides further implies multiple vantage points for fishing enthusiasts.
- Flag Pole Access: While seemingly a minor detail, the mention of a "flag pole" suggests that the site is integrated into the official camp grounds, potentially indicating a sense of community or organized activities if the broader camp is in operation.
It is important to note a specific issue highlighted in recent customer reviews regarding the latrine facilities. As of October 2023, the "latrean is out of order entirely here" and there were "no quick plans to fix as it was a huge repair." This means that while full bathrooms are accessible nearby, there is no functional latrine directly at the Cypress Knee Camp Site itself. Campers should be prepared for this situation and plan to utilize the main full bathrooms within the Camp Trevor Rees-Jones facility. It is always advisable to call ahead and confirm the current status of all facilities before your visit to ensure the most up-to-date information.
Cypress Knee Camp Site, while providing a rustic camping experience, boasts several features and highlights that make it an appealing choice for Texans seeking an outdoor retreat. Understanding these aspects can help you determine if this site aligns with your camping preferences.
- Excellent Location within Camp Trevor Rees-Jones: A primary highlight is its prime location within the established Camp Trevor Rees-Jones. This offers campers the security and managed environment of a larger facility, often including access to trails, a sense of community, and potential for other activities offered by the main camp. The integration within a well-known camp system can provide a more structured and reassuring camping experience, especially for families or those new to camping.
- Proximity to Full Bathrooms and Pavilions: As noted in the services section, the close proximity to full bathrooms is a significant convenience. This eliminates the need for more primitive sanitation methods, making the camping experience more comfortable for many. The availability of two pavilions also provides sheltered spaces for various activities, from meal preparation to group gatherings, offering a practical advantage, especially during unpredictable Texas weather.
- Excellent Fishing Opportunities: The access to "bridge on both sides for fishing" is a major draw for anglers. This indicates that the campsite provides direct and convenient access to fishing spots, allowing campers to easily enjoy this popular outdoor activity. The presence of bridges on both sides suggests diverse fishing locations and potentially different types of fish to target, enhancing the fishing experience.
- Traditional Camping Experience: For those who appreciate a more authentic and less developed camping environment, Cypress Knee Camp Site delivers. It offers a sense of being truly "out in nature" while still having essential amenities within reach, striking a balance between ruggedness and convenience.
However, it is crucial to address a notable characteristic: the site's susceptibility to rain. As highlighted by previous campers, if it rains, the site "turns into a mud pit." The sandy/clay composition of the ground transforms into a "squishy quicksand-like material," which can be "horribly messy" and lead to vehicles getting stuck easily. This is a significant factor to consider, and campers are strongly advised to "Avoid if raining at all!" and to check weather forecasts rigorously before their visit. While this presents a challenge during wet conditions, in dry weather, this same terrain can contribute to the site's natural charm and rustic appeal, offering a genuine outdoor experience away from paved surfaces.

Excellent location camp site at TRJ, however, worst at TRJ of there is rain! Latrean is out of order in Oct 2023 and Ranger said there was I quick plans to fix as it was a huge repair, so check ahead and expect no close latrean bathroom. Near the full bathrooms and two pavilions, flag pool, etc. Access to bathrooms and bridge on both sides for fishing make it great. However, if it rains, this site turns into a mud pit. The site is mostly sand/clay and turns into a squishy quicksand like material. It is horribly messy and vehicles get stuck easily! Avoid if raining at all! See pictures I have included from Oct 2023! Also note the latrean is out of order entirely here!
