🌅 Introduction / Overview: Your Peaceful Pause on the South Dakota Plains
For South Dakota residents and travelers exploring the heart of the state, finding a campground that perfectly balances convenience with comfort is essential. Dakota Sunsets Campground in Salem, SD, offers exactly that—a well-maintained, welcoming RV oasis praised for its easy accessibility and high standard of service. Situated strategically along the Interstate 90 corridor, this park is not just a place to sleep; it’s a peaceful retreat where attention to detail transforms a simple stopover into a truly enjoyable experience.
The name speaks for itself: the campground is surrounded by vast South Dakota agricultural fields (corn and soybean), providing an unobstructed view of the region's famous, dramatic sunsets. Its location in the 57058 zip code, just 1.5 miles from I-90, makes it an ideal central point—a perfect midway oasis for those commuting between the Sioux Falls metro area and western attractions like the Corn Palace in Mitchell. As confirmed by numerous satisfied customers, the park is known for being "clean and well taken care of," offering "beautiful, level sites" that minimize setup time and maximize relaxation.
Dakota Sunsets Campground is meticulously designed to cater to modern travelers, especially those in larger rigs. It boasts a high number of full-hookup, pull-through sites, complemented by top-tier amenities like free, fast Wi-Fi and a seasonal swimming pool. The dedication of the owners—often noted for their friendly, helpful service and thoughtful touches like fresh-baked cookies and pet treats—elevates the experience from a typical RV park stay to a genuinely memorable stop on your South Dakota journey.
This guide will detail the services and features that make this Big Rig Friendly campground a highly-recommended choice for local users.

The park's location is just off US Highway 81, a mere 1.5 miles north of Interstate 90 at Exit 364. This proximity to I-90 is crucial, providing rapid access for travelers. Despite being close to the freeway, the park is set back just enough to maintain a wonderfully quiet and peaceful atmosphere, with no disturbances from nearby railroads or airports.
Accessibility for all vehicles, especially large ones, is a deliberate design feature. The park is explicitly Big Rig Friendly, featuring wide, well-maintained (and often watered down to prevent dust) gravel roadways and extra-long, perfectly level pull-through sites that can accommodate rigs up to 90 feet in length, including towables. This makes check-in and setup a "quick and easy" process. The town of Salem, just a short drive away, provides immediate access to basic amenities, including a local 9-hole golf course, while being centrally located between the cultural and retail offerings of Mitchell (home of the Corn Palace) and Sioux Falls (Falls Park).

Choosing Dakota Sunsets Campground is choosing a hassle-free, comfortable, and friendly stop on your South Dakota journey. It is worth choosing for three compelling reasons:
First, the Unmatched Big Rig Accessibility and Comfort is unparalleled for a quick stop. If you travel in a large RV, the combination of exceptionally long, level pull-through sites, wide access roads, and full 50-amp hookups eliminates the stress of maneuvering and leveling, making check-in a "breeze."

Great spot if you’re traveling though and need a quick place to sleep right off the freeway! Easy to find, easy to book and easy to check in and out. The campground itself was clean and well taken care of. We had a great experience!
Very nice place. Beautiful, level sites in a well maintained campground. Big Rig Friendly! People were very nice, and helpful as well. Would definitely book again.
Nice quiet campground! Stayed 1 night here on our travels! Kids loved the play grounds, dog park, shaded, showers, firewoood, and well kept! Beautiful sunsets!
Great campground with easy access from highway. Level campsites with mature shade trees. Very quiet spot with laundry available. This is a self check in campground, as we did not see any staff the whole time we were here.
Mens bathroom could be a bit cleaner. The playground at the campground was not as advertised based on the website. It's 90s dangerous fun. If you have multiple campsites it's important to advertise properly for each camp ground location. Overall clean and great for a night stay to or from destination.
