Dean Cow Introduce

Dean Cow, located in Cimarron, New Mexico, was a unique campground known for its distinctive hippy climbing camp atmosphere. As a part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, it offered a specialized experience for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in climbing. Situated within a lush, narrow valley, Dean Cow was a Philmont Staff camp that provided a range of recreational opportunities.

According to visitor reviews, Dean Cow featured climbing walls, "warm" showers, and a volleyball pit where "cow ball" was a popular evening activity. The camp's layout was described as long and narrow, which meant campsite locations could vary significantly in distance from the camp lodge and showers.

However, it is important to note that the structures of Dean Cow Camp were tragically lost in the Ute Park fire on May 31st, 2018. Despite this loss, the area's natural rock formations, a key feature of the camp, remain intact. As noted by reviewers, these rock formations are a lasting element of the landscape.

While the original facilities were destroyed, there is information indicating that Philmont intends to rebuild the showers. Therefore, while the camp's current state may differ from past experiences, the natural beauty of the area, particularly the rock formations, continues to attract those interested in outdoor activities.

Dean Cow, despite the fire's impact, remains a location of interest for those seeking a unique outdoor experience in the Cimarron area. The remaining rock formations offer a glimpse into the area's natural beauty and potential for future recreational opportunities.

Dean Cow is a hippy climbing camp located in a lush narrow valley. This Philmont Staff camp offers a couple climbing walls, “warm” showers and volley ball pit where cow ball is played in the evenings. We enjoyed our stay in this camp despite our late arrival. The camp is long and narrow and your camp site can be located a long ways from the camp lodge and showers.

Sadly, Philmont has stated that all structures of the Dean Cow Camp were lost in the Ute Park fire on May 31st, 2018. But what is awesome about this place is the rock formations, and you can't burn them! Don't worry guys. Philmont will rebuild the showers. :)
