About 6 free BLM camping sites. Fire ring and a large table. You have to park close to the road and walk in a bit. Sites are just off the road and a previous poster mentioned a lot of traffic, but we did not find that to be the case. The sites are right on the water, and it’s a beautiful little stream. The toilet is well up the road and was pretty gross, not cared for, BYOP. (Bring your own paper) Very convenient off I 70 but no road noises. We were just there for a layover. Took a nice hike and ride our bikes down to the main road. If I’d had time I might have biked up the road, it is a beautiful area.
We were searching for a quiet and green free camping option on our way to Utah on a Saturday in July, around 4pm. I found this free campground along a beautiful river on google maps and we checked it out. It was completely full. So we drove up a road for some miles and found another spot directly by the street but with a fire place and grandios view on the green mountains all around. So we decided to stay here for the night. The nature is absolutely breathtaking but this road up the hill is used by tons of people who are driving high speed like on Pikes Peak Hill Climb and in many cases with loud music on so that you can here them already for miles. We came here at 4:30pm and people drove up and down until midnight. It wasn’t a peaceful place anymore and even in the middle of the night cars drove down like at 1am and 3am. It’s crazy when you’re camping directly next to the street. Anyway, there was an outhouse (very dirty, but at least you could use it).. down the road a bit. I still rate with 3 stars here because the nature and views are extremely beautiful and we haven’t camped down the river, but next to the streets.
BLM camping available off of the mail road, with gorgeous views but be extra careful this is a 1 way road up the mountain with tight turns, not many spaces to turn around and steep drops off of the mountain, a few people have lost their lives here. The trail to the lake is about 1.5 hours and it does not open until the end of June due to the snow! Safe travels!
Great campground!! We arrived around 7 pm on a Friday and drove about 4 miles past the bathroom (10-15 minutes depending on how fast you can drive along the bumpy dirt road) and found this great, private campsite with rock fire pits already formed. The views were incredible! Highly recommend driving up the road if the first campsites by the river are taken. There were plenty of pull off areas with fire pits. Had intermittent service up at our spot too.
Gorgeous dispersed campsites. Only a short drive on the dirt road, and the campsites (we stayed at site 2) are large, private, and on the river. Didn't want to leave! No cell service, but a short drive to a nice parking spot and trailhead with service, or even a pretty highway rest stop. Chuck Turner's review has the details.
