Deerhead was my first experience camping west of the Mississippi in April 2024. To say the least, it was magical considering the tall trees, views, fresh air, cool temps. Also, the host was amazing and very helpful. For example, I had nothing to leave while away to secure the sight and he volunteered to put out an orange traffic to show the sight was occupied. He was super friendly and helpful. The bathroom I used was very clean and the park was well kept. Finally, both the host and Deerhead are superb. Thank you Sir.
We drove from South Texas to New Mexico for our kids to experience snowfall.. Right when we arrive, we were blessed and snow started to fall.. it was awesome. Definitely will be returning next year.
Restrooms were clean. Nice picnic areas for day use. Beautiful area.
A beautiful place to stop and camp for the night! Cool up at this elevation. No water source and only outhouses. But a good campground with woods and shade. I liked the wheelchair accessible sites available. If you camp here take water.
This was our first time at Deerhead. The camp manager was very helpful if we needed anything, he was happy to help. He has firewood bundles for sale in case you need any ($8 per bundle). The price per night is $28. Day picnics are the same price as well. Dogs are allowed but need to be leashed. The whole place is pretty quiet, even on the weekends. If it does get loud after hours, he’ll make sure to let them know to be quiet. There is cell service. There is also a spigot by the pay station to refill your water jugs. There are three bathrooms with vaulted toilets. They keep the bathrooms stocked but bring a roll for jic because there was one day that we didn’t have toilet paper in one of the toilets, or you could just go to one of the other bathrooms until they restock the one. There wasn’t any hand sanitizer when we went so bring your own. There are two dumpsters for trash which was pretty helpful, just beware that at night there may be raccoons rummaging about. PLEASE CLOSE DUMPSTER DOORS and also put away any food, to include dog food before heading to bed. There are trails for hiking, and biking. Cloudcroft Village is literally around the corner, so if you need ice, Family Dollar is open until 9pm, Allsups is 24hr, but if those run out, there is a convenience store down the road about 6 miles that has their own ice machine. They also have fresh eggs, so get there pretty early because they go fast. We tried Brother In Law BBQ one day that it rained the whole day, and they were really good and very hospitable! The little shops are great as well and have so much to look at. The coffee shop was closed when we went so we didn’t get to try them, but that’s for next time. If you need a new axe, fly trapping ribbons, or anything else related, New Village Hardware store is the place you need. It’s literally around the corner. It’s under new ownership, and they’re amazing! Check them out! If you need anything more than that, as in Harbor Freight, Walmart (has a Penguin Ice machine), Lowe’s, or even a hot shower at the Texaco truck stop, all that is 11 miles away. There is also a nice lookout point just before the campground for pictures and viewing. The only cons about this place is that it’s open, so there are cars driving in and out all times of the day and night looking around and leaving. The gopher holes made it to where we couldn’t put our tent where we wanted it to be. Sometimes you’d have that one motorcyclist revving their engine unnecessarily which then echoes throughout the park, but I don’t count any of that against the park itself. I hope I covered all the things I needed to know BEFORE going that wasn’t in the reviews when I looked. Happy Camping guys!
