Deerlick Creek Campground Introduce
For Alabamians seeking a refreshing escape into nature with the comforts of a well-maintained facility, Deerlick Creek Campground in Tuscaloosa, AL, offers a truly inviting experience. Situated on the picturesque Holt Lake, part of the Black Warrior River, this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park is a cherished local spot for camping, water activities, and reconnecting with the great outdoors. It's a versatile destination that caters to everything from a relaxing lakeside retreat to an active family adventure.
Deerlick Creek Campground is renowned among local campers for its beautiful setting and well-appointed sites. As one satisfied visitor shared, "We spent 4 nights here in our fifth wheel in site 17 overlooking the lake. Upper loops are more suited for bigger rigs as they have a cul de sac turn around that the lower sites do not have. Stayed during a weather event & the camp hosts were very helpful in finding a local storm shelter." This testimonial highlights not only the scenic beauty and thoughtful layout for various rig sizes but also the helpfulness of the camp hosts – a crucial element for a comfortable and secure stay, especially when Alabama weather can be unpredictable.
While the park offers abundant recreational opportunities, it's important for Alabamians to be aware of operational details. One user's experience noted, "I visited this park on Saturday May 3rd and wanted to just purchase a day pass. The person working the gate told me that the beach was closed. I stated I wasn't going to visit the beach, that I wanted to hike/walk on the trails. She told me that I couldn't because the day use area was closed. When I asked 'Why?' She just told me that it was." This review, while pointing to a potential past issue with day-use access, emphasizes the importance of checking current park conditions and hours of operation directly with the campground or through official channels like Recreation.gov before visiting, especially for day-use activities. Park closures for maintenance, like the announced full closure for waterline replacement in 2025, are also essential to verify. Despite occasional operational adjustments, Deerlick Creek consistently remains a top choice for its beauty and amenities for those planning an overnight stay.
The overall sentiment from campers often praises the campground for its cleanliness, friendly staff, and peaceful atmosphere. Many sites offer excellent privacy with good spacing between them, and amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, and even decks on some sites enhance the camping experience. Whether you're pulling a large RV or pitching a tent, Deerlick Creek strives to provide a pleasant environment for enjoying the beauty of Holt Lake and the surrounding mixed pine and hardwood forest. Its commitment to maintaining the grounds and providing essential services makes it a reliable choice for local outdoor enthusiasts.
Deerlick Creek Campground is located at 12421 Deerlick Rd, Tuscaloosa, AL 35406, USA. While the provided address uses "Unnamed Road," official sources confirm the Deerlick Road address. This prime location places it northeast of Tuscaloosa, directly on the shores of Holt Lake, a section of the Black Warrior River. For residents across Alabama, particularly those in the central and western regions, its proximity to Tuscaloosa makes it an easily accessible destination.
Getting to Deerlick Creek involves navigating some "curvy up & down roads" for about "20 minutes out of town," as one reviewer mentioned, but the journey is well worth it for the lakeside setting. From I-59 in Alabama, visitors typically take Exit 73 (MacFarland Boulevard), then follow a series of turns onto Rice Mine Road, New Watermelon Road, and finally Lake Nicol Road leading to Deerlick Road. This well-established route ensures that while it feels like a genuine escape, it remains connected to urban conveniences.
The campground's location on Holt Lake provides direct access to water recreation, which is a major draw. Despite being nestled in a natural, wooded area, Deerlick Creek is only about 17 miles from the University of Alabama, offering the possibility to combine a relaxing outdoor trip with sporting events, museums, or exploring the vibrant city life of Tuscaloosa. We spent 4 night here in our fifth wheel in site 17 overlooking the lake. Upper loops are more suited for bigger rigs as they have a cul de sac turn around that the lower sites do not have. One of the BEST CAMPGROUNDS we have been. Well worth the stay
Campground is on the outskirts of Tuscaloosa. Very quiet and nice big camp sites. The campground is clean. Hosts are friendly and accommated us returning late (after 10pm)because of our granddaughters' graduation. We have been there a couple of times. Bathrooms/ shower facilities are always clean. Washer and dryers are only for staff. This time, the bathrooms were extremely hot. No windows were open, and they had signs posted to keep doors closed.
I almost want to give this place a bad review. That way it will never be busy. It is amazing! This is probably one of my favorite state parks. The sites are set up so that you feel alone and not cramped next to other travel trailers. The hosts are amazing. If you want a place to unwind and reconnect with nature, this is the place.
