Perfect bike/kayak campsite to test out bike camping while riding The New River Trail. Port a John was surprisingly clean and had trash can nearby but need to bring your own water or way to purify River water at campsite. New River Trail well maintained with potable water at a few stops and port a Johns along the trail. Biking with a Trek FX3 with 700/32 tires and as long as trail dry it is hard packed and could even have 28 tires. My preference would be 700/35 or 38 tires.
We stopped for a night headed home after a long road trip. Semi secluded spot. Easy hike in, easy as in flat, no climbs or decents, well maintained wide and smooth path with benches every mile or so for people who require frequent rests. It was 26° and snowing the night we went but we regret nothing. Well worth it.
Sites are flat! Secluded and quiet. Porta potty and benches and tables here. Trees not idea for hammocking so better bring a tent.
About 3.5 miles in from the closest parking at the New River Deli. Two camping spots with fire pits and picnic tables.
This is a small, but very nice camping area on the New River, approximately 2 miles downriver of the Fries Junction area. There are basically only two campsites, but several people could camp here comfortably. I've spent two nights here in recent years and it was very peaceful. The sound from an area of rapids just upriver lulled me to sleep. I feel that the $17 per night fee is a bit much, considering there are no facilities aside from a vault toilet. I suppose you could say that the atmosphere is worth the price. There is no "piped" water here, but there are a couple small springs nearby on the opposite side of the trail. I gathered water from one of those springs. I filtered AND boiled it just in case, and had no ill-effects. So if you can hike or bike in with your gear, try spending the night here. I think you'll enjoy it. By the way, there are picnic tables, fire rings, and a good amount of grassy area to pitch your tent.
