We spent 3 days there to meet family and watch the eclipse. Super nice place. Kathy was very responsive and helpful. We dry camped with our with our travel travel in one of many great locations. The bathroom/ shower was immaculate and nicely outfitted The big pets, longhorns, wandered near camp for a bit of entertainment. We appreciated all the extra touches, like the gift baggie with sun & moon items, offering us a hookup site the last day, tacos by the cook with authentic chuck wagon, and bonfire the night the 7th. Enjoyed chatting with Don about 8 generations of running cows on their other ranch. It’s a big property with more acres to explore than we had time to do. Highly recommend Down Horn for either RV or camping
We have family in Llano so we wanted to stay nearby and my wife and I always camp on our road trips. This was a perfect find because it is inexpensive but also has bathroom and showers which are necessities when camping in TX. Here is my review: 1. Finding the ranch: it's fairly easy to find as it is the last drive on the left of the road. However, Google maps marks it incorrectly so just ignore where the map tells you to stop and continue to the end of the road. The gate is well marked and easy to find. 2. The layout: the first spot you enter is a pasture area with a couple of cabins and the bathroom/shower. The road is well worn so you don't need to worry about whether or not you are on the right track. Once you continue through the first area you will come to the RV hookups. They are also well marked and laid out. If you continue to follow the road it will take you back to the dispersed camping sites. Each one is clearly marked and pretty easy to find. They are very well spread out so even if all of them are full you won't see another group from your campsite. We reserved number 2 but since no one else was in the campground we were allowed to select a spot. We took site #3. 3. The location: it takes between 10 and 15 minutes to get to Llano from camp so you are close enough to get to town quickly, but far enough that you see no city lights. We have T-Mobile phone service and there is absolutely no service anywhere near the ranch. I do not know about other providers.
Our experience at Down Horn Ranch completely exceeded our expectations. The first thing i noticed upon arrival was the peace and quiet and the wonderful scents wafting from the nearby groves of trees. The lovely scenery, gracious hosts Cathy and Don, thoughtful touches for our comfort, acceptance of my dog, and the hosted chuck-wagon dinner and bonfire to celebrate the night before the eclipse all combined to make it a perfect place to stay. Cute long-horn calves watched us from as close as they dared to approach. If I didn't live so far away in Oregon, I can confidently say I'd return any time (well, maybe not in the middle of summer, lol).
What a piece of heaven on earth! If you have the opportunity to stay here book it asap! Easy access in and out of the gated ranch, beautiful drive in, 10 mins from store and gas stations. Owners Kathy and Don went above and beyond for our family while we were there. The ranch is breathtakingly beautiful and the free range long horns on the ranch make the experience so special. There are cabins, rv spots with power and water hookups, tent sites that are very spread out and private and a very nice bathroom and shower available for use. A creek runs through the property and the stars at night are magical. It felt like we were in a snow globe of stars! We were lucky enough to come during wild flower season in early April and the weather was perfect! Can’t say enough good things about this property and our experience staying there.
What a splendid spot this is! We camped in our campervan at Down Horn for the eclipse and it was just delightful. Quiet, not crowded, plenty of on-site walking opportunities. We also arrived in time for the magnificent Hill Country wildflowers and were completely blown away! The hosts were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay there again!
