Dry Wolf Campground Introduce
For Montanans looking to disconnect from the hustle and truly recharge in nature, Dry Wolf Campground offers an authentic and tranquil escape. Nestled within the scenic Lewis and Clark National Forest in the heart of the Little Belt Mountains, this location embodies the best of Montana's rustic beauty. Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,900 feet, the campground is a picture of serenity, surrounded by lush meadows, towering spruce, and fir trees. The crystal-clear Dry Wolf Creek runs right alongside the campground, providing a soothing soundtrack to your peaceful retreat.
Dry Wolf Campground provides a rustic, traditional camping experience, ideal for both tent and RV campers who prefer a more primitive and quiet setting over crowded, amenity-heavy resorts. Historically significant, the campgroundās foundation dates back to a Kiwanis Club project in 1930, with improvements made by the WPA in 1937 and the Forest Service in the 1960s, giving it a true sense of place and heritage in Charlie Russell Country. Itās a place to embrace the simplicity of the outdoors, offering a wonderful environment for families and solo adventurers alike to enjoy the forest and the refreshing creek.
There are approximately 25 individual campsites available, and it operates on a strict first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not accepted. This policy helps maintain its quieter, less crowded atmosphere, even on busier weekends like Memorial Day. Visitors must adhere to 'pack in, pack out' principles, respecting the pristine environment for all to enjoy. Note that dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect the local wildlife and other campers.
Dry Wolf Campground is located south of the small Montana community of Stanford, MT, positioning it conveniently yet remotely in the central part of the state. Its setting in the Little Belt Mountains places it in a prime location for exploring the rugged forests and high meadows of the Lewis and Clark National Forest.
Physical Address: Dry Wolf Rd, Stanford, MT 59479, USA.
Directions from Stanford, MT (as advised by the Forest Service):
From Stanford, take US Highway 87 north for about 1.2 miles until you see the Forest Access sign. Turn left onto the designated access road (which is part of the Dry Wolf Road system) and travel approximately 4.3 miles to a 'Y' intersection. Bear right at this intersection and continue for about 15.7 miles until you reach the campground sign, then turn right into the campground.
A Note on Road Conditions:
Prospective visitors should be aware that accessibility requires traveling on gravel roads for the vast majority of the distance after the first paved mile. The last several miles, specifically the final 8 miles, are noted to be single-lane in parts. This is a characteristic of many true Montana forest service roads and contributes to the area's isolation and tranquility. Campers with large RV rigs should be prepared to take the drive slowly and carefully due to the narrow sections and gravel surface. Due to typical heavy snowfall, access is generally seasonal, with the campground usually open from June through the middle of fall. Winter access would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, so planning a summer or early fall trip is highly recommended.
Dry Wolf Campground offers essential services designed to support a traditional, rustic camping experience, emphasizing self-sufficiency and minimal impact. The facilities are maintained by the Lewis and Clark National Forest, with fees collected via a self-serve station.

A nearby 2.5-mile hiking trail offers opportunities to stretch your legs and potentially spot local wildlife, including mountain goats, elk, and deer. Numerous other trails in the Little Belt Mountains are easily accessible from the area.
 - Wildlife and Cattle: The area is active with wildlife. You may encounter cattle grazing throughout the forest, which is a common and charming sight in this part of rural Montana. Visitors must be bear-aware; a food storage order is in effect from March 1st to December 1st to prevent human-bear conflicts, requiring all unattended food and attractants to be properly secured.
 - Spacious and Peaceful Sites: Campers consistently praise the sites for being spacious and the overall atmosphere for being very quiet, making it an ideal choice for a peaceful retreat away from city noise.

Customer Reviews
Great place to get away and enjoy the forest, a great source of water and the creek, very quiet. The campground is $15 per night. It would be hard to get to during the winter months. The roads are gravel the entire way and narrow at parts if you have a big RV rig then take it slow. There is cattle grazing through out. The drive up is beautiful. The creek is right on the camp ground. The spots are spacious. There is a water fill up spout right before the camp ground. This is a great place to go have a peaceful retreat and recharge.
Great campground! Pack in pack out with fire pits/grates, and a nice picnic table at each of the 25+ sites. $5/might fee as of 2018, looks like it's going up to $15 in 2019. Beautiful Dry Wolf Creek is crystal clear. Hand pump water and clean vault toilets. 2.5mi hiking trail where you might spot mountain goats! Not overly busy even on Memorial Day weekend. No reservations. 22mi south of Stanford MT on a nice gravel road. Dogs welcome on a leash.
Beautiful place to camp when its not raining nights are cold was able to hear the elk go through it was cool to hear and a little spooky other than that enjoyed it there
A lovely campground! Spaces are pretty far apart, large, and idyllic. Lots of hiking in the area. A creek provides lovely white noise. :)
$ 15 a day no maintenance, roads are terrible. Weeds are crazy, stumps all over. Poor training on land management, but.... very beautiful place. Stream always has a music to it.
