Frank Herbert, who wrote “Dune,” was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington. Growing up, he spent a lot of time on the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas. Dune Peninsula Park in Tacoma is named after his novel. One of Herbert’s concerns was how pollution was negatively impacting the planet, including his beloved Pacific Northwest. The park is built on the ruins of a historic lead and copper smelter. If you’re ever anywhere near Tacoma, I recommend you take time to see this spectacular park. It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. I was there for close to three hours and would’ve stayed longer, but it started to get dark. No matter which direction you look, the views are dramatic and stunning. Highly Recommended!!!
Worth a visit for any Frank Herbert and/or Dune fan. Free parking, some cool small sandworm sculptures, and seals on rocks near the peninsula. I guess seals are pretty normal for people who live here, but for myself (born and raised in Michigan) and my wife (from Japan), it was a big bonus!
What a peaceful and scenic spot! Nice walking paths, look out points and plenty of parking! Plus nearby Chutes and ladders- lots of stairs/slides for kiddos!
Dune Peninsula at Point Defiance Park is an absolute gem! The views here are stunning whether you're walking along the trails or just relaxing by the water, the scenery never disappoints. The park offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and modern design, with plenty of open spaces to explore. I love how peaceful it feels, and the combination of dunes, beach, and forest is just breathtaking. It’s also a great spot for photography, picnicking, or just soaking in the fresh air. If you're in the area, definitely make time to visit; it's one of Tacoma’s hidden treasures!
