The Kootenai River itself is a prominent landmark, and the campground's location right alongside it provides stunning views and immediate access to the water. It's a prime spot for exploring the diverse recreational opportunities that the Libby area and the wider Kootenai National Forest have to offer, from hiking and wildlife viewing to simply relaxing by the riverside.
Dunn Creek Flats Campground & Boat Ramp offers essential services geared towards comfortable and accessible outdoor recreation, particularly for those looking to enjoy the Kootenai River.
-
Large Campground: As described by a reviewer, this is a "Large campground." This means ample space, offering a greater number of campsites and generally more room between sites compared to smaller, more intimate campgrounds. This is beneficial for accommodating groups or for those who prefer more elbow room during their stay.
-
Facilities for Tent Camping: The campground provides "facilities if tent camping." While specific details aren't provided in the reviews, this typically implies access to amenities such as pit toilets or vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. These basic facilities enhance the comfort of tent campers without detracting from the natural experience.
-
Boat Ramp: A key service offered, and part of its name, is the boat ramp. This allows direct and easy access for launching boats onto the Kootenai River, making it incredibly convenient for fishing, water sports, or leisurely river cruises. This feature is a major draw for aquatic enthusiasts.
-
Kootenai River Access: Beyond the boat ramp, the campground's location directly on the Kootenai River means easy access for fishing from the bank, wading, or simply enjoying the riverside scenery. The "beautiful location on Kootenai River" is a consistent highlight.
It's important to note that while facilities are present, Dunn Creek Flats is likely a fairly primitive or semi-developed campground within the national forest system. Campers should generally expect to bring their own water, and there are unlikely to be electric hookups or dump stations, unless specifically noted by the forest service. Always check with the Kootenai National Forest for the most up-to-date information on specific amenities available.
Dunn Creek Flats Campground & Boat Ramp stands out with several key features and highlights that draw campers to its beautiful location.
-

-
No Shade (Important Consideration): While some might view this as a drawback, the explicit mention of "NO SHADE so it can get really hot there" is a crucial highlight for planning. For campers who understand this, it means being prepared with tarps, canopies, and extra water, and potentially enjoying more sun during cooler seasons. It also suggests open skies, which can be great for stargazing, though not explicitly mentioned in reviews.
-
Ideal for Tent Camping: The explicit mention of "facilities if tent camping" underscores its suitability for traditional tent campers, indicating that basic infrastructure is in place to support this style of camping.

We enjoy spending time here! Beautiful location on Kootenai River! Large campground, facilities if tent camping! ๐
Super great campground along the Kootenai River. NO SHADE so it can get really hot there.
Free camping with bathrooms, picnic tables ,and fire pits, right next to the river for easy fishing access and there's a boat ramp, extra parking lot with a basketball hoop ...There's only so many spots, so first come first serve... Rangers come once a day to check pits.
Great COE campground, very clean, with river views at most campsites. 14 day stay max. Pit toilets and hand pump water available.
Really pretty location right next to the river and down the road from the Libby dam. Quite a few camping spaces, clean bathrooms, and is super well kept. There are also quite a few trash cans and dumpsters which are emptied regularly. About 15 minutes out of town which makes it really convenient. Good for tent camping and campers. Very quite and beautiful, we really enjoyed staying here.
