East Caribou River Camp Introduce

**East Caribou River Camp: North Shore Backpacking Made Accessible and Grand**

For Minnesotans exploring the legendary **Superior Hiking Trail (SHT)** along the rugged North Shore, finding a campsite that offers both pristine wilderness and comfortable space is a true victory. **East Caribou River Camp**, located near the charming community of Schroeder, is one of the trail’s most sought-after spots, celebrated for its **vast size** and its stunning riverside setting. This is not a secluded, tiny forest pull-off; it is a sprawling, designated SHT campsite managed by the Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA), perfectly positioned to serve as an excellent base for multi-day section hikes.

The camp's most immediate draw is its proximity to the beautiful **Caribou River**. The constant flow of the water provides a soothing and persistent background noise that creates a "nice peaceful atmosphere," according to grateful visitors. It operates under the traditional SHT guidelines: **primitive, first-come, first-served**, and strictly **Leave No Trace**—meaning hikers pack out everything they pack in. Importantly, the East Caribou River Camp is noted for its relative ease of access. As one reviewer mentioned, it is an "easy hike up from the parking spot," making it a popular choice for families, beginners to backpacking, or groups who simply want to set up a scenic, wilderness base camp quickly before tackling more strenuous day-hike portions of the SHT. Its large capacity, described as "huge," ensures that multiple groups can fit comfortably, though the spirit of sharing and wilderness courtesy is always paramount.

**Location and Accessibility**

East Caribou River Camp is strategically situated on the **Superior Hiking Trail**, inland from Lake Superior in the general area of **Schroeder, MN 55613, USA**. Access is strictly by foot via the SHT footpath, as there is no road leading directly to the campsite.

* **Nearest Trailhead:** The campsite is most easily accessed from the nearby **Caribou River Trailhead** parking lot (located off Cook County Road 4 / Caribou Trail). The hike is generally considered a short and relatively easy walk from the parking area—perfect for a late afternoon arrival or for quick weekend trips. * **Trail Directions:** From the trailhead, hikers follow the SHT south or north, with the camp situated a short distance off the main trail corridor. The hike follows the scenic **Caribou River**, allowing for a pleasant journey that builds anticipation for the riverside camp. * **Foot Travel Only:** As a dedicated SHT backcountry camp, it is accessible only by hiking. This maintains the wilderness character of the site. * **Proximity to North Shore:** Its location near the Caribou Trail provides convenient access to the amenities and scenic destinations of **Schroeder** and **Tofte**, allowing hikers to resupply or easily connect to the North Shore Scenic Drive (Highway 61). * **Elevation:** The campsite sits at a relatively lower elevation near the river, making the final approach less strenuous than some of the ridge-top campsites.

**Services Offered**

The East Caribou River Camp adheres to the established primitive standards of the Superior Hiking Trail. It provides necessary infrastructure to minimize the environmental impact of campers but offers no modern facilities or running water.

The core, primitive services provided at this SHT campsite include:

  • **Designated Tent Pads:** The campsite is noted for having **multiple, spacious tent sites** scattered throughout two distinct camping areas. This makes it ideal for several small groups or one large permitted group (max 9 people).
  • **Shared Fire Rings:** A dedicated **fire ring** (usually rock or metal) is available for campfires and cooking. Users must source dead and downed firewood and comply with all current fire regulations.
  • **Backcountry Latrine (Privy):** A simple, outdoor privy or **box latrine** is situated a short distance from the main camping area, crucial for sanitary human waste disposal.
  • **Water Source:** The **Caribou River** is the immediate water source. This water is **non-potable** and must be collected and treated (filtered, boiled, or chemically purified) before consumption.
  • **Capacity:** The site is large and designed to accommodate multiple parties, though official SHT guidelines limit individual groups to **nine people**.
  • **No Reservations/Fee:** The use of the SHT campsites, including East Caribou River Camp, is generally **free of charge** and operates on a **first-come, first-served** basis.
