Echo Park Campground

Long semi rough road in. If earlier in the day only a couple shady spots in the campground. Once the sun goes behind the huge rock the whole campground is shaded. Views were nice BUT the mosquitoes will eat you alive!!!!!!! We used multiple bug spray brands including high DEET and started a fire. Bug spray or smoke didn’t deter them. I wouldn’t stay here again.

The switchbacks and rough trail may deter some (don't forget to downshift your vehicle to save your brakes), but the view is completely worth it. You will not have any service there as to be expected, don't forget you can download portions of Google maps offline. All the campers were extremely friendly and mostly stuck to themselves. If you see Joe (tan Tacoma, white bearded vet) he's your expert on the sights there (such as the waterfalls in sand canyon). You will not regret the drive to this spot. If there's any emergency, you will likely have other campers, but there is also a ranger station just to the east with an emergency radio in a yellow pelican box.

Excellent campground stop by the river. This campground is accessible to offroad vehicles but in the right conditions all wheel drive vehicles can reach it easily. Do not attempt the road in rain as very dangerous conditions can develop. Check with rangers for the latest road conditions as things can change from the time of this review.

Awesome campground. No cell service for miles. No trailers or low clearance or long wheelbase trucks. Would not recommend anyone attempting the descent from the canyon rim into the park if the road is wet or if rain is in the forecast. Steep hill with tight switchbacks may give the long wheelbase vehicles some issues when dry conditions exist. Great weekend adventure. A few nice hikes. Can be very windy in the afternoon and evening. Consider not having a campfire and using your propane grill. Grass and sage brush is very dry and there is only one road out of the campground to the main 4x4 road. Lastly, dogs are not allowed along the river trails, only in the campground on leash.

Absolutely incredible campground. Fee required, and bathrooms and potable water available. The 12-mile drive on Echo Park Road is all it's cracked up to be: steep, loose chunky rock, creek crossings, sandy sections. The peace and quiet once you make it down is worth the trek.

Beautiful place, worth the treacherous drive. 4X4 not required if roads are dry. This is one of the most beautiful parks I have visited, rivaling the grand canyon. The river is beautiful and trails over stunning vistas. Unfortunately, the only treasures you will find here are the memories you leave with. Or animal bones. An awesome place to camp before bug season. Keep an eye out for wildlife, it is everywhere.
