🌲 Introduction / Overview: Your Rustic Retreat on the Baptism River
For Minnesotans seeking an authentic, less-developed camping experience on the iconic North Shore, **Eckbeck Campground** is a cherished secret. Located near the quaint community of Finland, this site offers a perfect balance of seclusion and accessibility to the region’s stunning natural attractions. Eckbeck is situated within the **Finland State Forest** and is managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), often serving as an excellent, quieter alternative when more popular nearby state parks like Tettegouche are full.
Eckbeck Campground is officially considered a **primitive campground**, designed to provide only the basic necessities for a genuine 'roughing it' experience, making it a beloved spot for tent campers and small recreational vehicles (RVs) who prefer simplicity over full amenities. The campground’s setting—adjacent to the beautiful **Baptism River**—is its undeniable centerpiece, offering the soothing sounds of running water as a constant backdrop to your Northwoods escape.
The sentiment from seasoned campers is overwhelmingly positive: "This is one of the best Campgrounds off the beaten path! I love this place & keep coming back." This reputation for being a fantastic, albeit rustic, getaway highlights its appeal to those looking to truly unplug. A more recent visitor shared their positive experience with the environment, noting: "Nice campground, beautiful area. I was there for 5 days the mosquitoes weren't bad and didn't get any ticks on me or my cat who ran around in the grass." While bug activity is always seasonal, the overall impression is one of a clean, well-kept, and beautiful natural environment.
🗺️ Location and Accessibility: Near the Heart of the North Shore
Eckbeck Campground’s location offers outstanding proximity to some of the North Shore's most breathtaking sites while maintaining a peaceful, set-back feel. It is conveniently accessible by car, just a short distance from major North Shore routes.
Official Location:
Eckbeck Park Rd, Finland, MN 55603, USA
Situated approximately three miles inland from **Lake Superior**, the campground is only a short drive from **Tettegouche State Park**, renowned for its dramatic cliffs and waterfalls. This proximity makes Eckbeck a perfect "base camp" for exploring the surrounding area, including the **Superior Hiking Trail (SHT)** and the charming towns of Finland and Silver Bay. The accessibility is straightforward, typically involving a short drive off a main highway onto Eckbeck Park Road. Visitors should note that while the campground is drive-in, the internal dirt roads may have potholes, so careful driving is advised.
A significant characteristic of Eckbeck is its operating model: **all 31 campsites are strictly first-come, first-served**. This means visitors cannot make advance reservations, fostering a spontaneous, adventurous approach to camping. Check-out is typically in the afternoon (often 4 PM), making the late afternoon a good time to arrive and secure a site, especially during peak summer and fall color weekends.

This is one of the best Campgrounds off the beaten path! I love this place & keep coming back. The sites are fantastic they have a firepit, picnic table, parking, spot to set up your tent, the only running water is the Baptism River & the fresh spring water pump to get good cold drinking water from, there are a few out houses. It's a first come first serve basis. If you're looking for a tenting slightly roughing it experience, Eckbeck is your place.
Nice campground, beautiful area. I was there for 5 days the mosquitoes weren't bad and didn't get any ticks on me or my cat who ran around in the grass. I had spotty cell service.(mint)
Campground was nice with restroom facilities there. Maintained well. For being far out as it was the traffic seemed to be a lot but it was the weekend so that may have played a factor. Otherwise, great experience and easy to get a spot if you come early enough. First come first served.
Just off of highway 1 along the baptism river. Plenty of spots and a good midway point between duluth and grand marais. 17 bucks a night. Nice primitive campground.
Typical State Forest Campground not much space even though there is a lot of space available. Self service/first come first serve full friday 4pm in season. There is a Well but takes a while to fill rv. Dump station by scenic overlook in Silverbay which is closest Grocery. Best firewood towards Finland on right side $5/armload. Not patrolled and if campground host gone bring ear plugs too. Dumpsters very back/last loop. A rocky shallow river runs around 1/2 of it ...
