Eightmile Campground Introduce

Eightmile Campground, a highly sought-after destination within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, offers an exceptional outdoor experience nestled within the stunning Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Located approximately eight miles from the charming Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth, Washington, this campground is a prime spot for those seeking immersion in nature combined with convenient access to recreational activities and local attractions. Its popularity stems from a harmonious blend of a pristine natural environment, well-maintained facilities, and a diverse range of features that cater to both seasoned outdoor enthusiasts and families looking for a relaxing escape.

The environment at Eightmile Campground is truly captivating, defined by its location along the scenic Icicle Creek. This natural feature provides not only a soothing soundtrack of flowing water but also opportunities for riverside relaxation and enjoyment. The campground is enveloped by dense forests, primarily composed of mature trees that offer ample shade and a sense of seclusion, creating a classic Pacific Northwest camping ambiance. The surrounding Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is renowned for its diverse landscapes, ranging from high, glaciated alpine peaks to valleys of old-growth forest and rugged shrub-steppe country. Elevations within the forest vary significantly, contributing to a rich array of flora and fauna. The air is crisp and clean, and the night skies are often clear, allowing for excellent stargazing. The presence of nearby mountain ponds and more than 700 lakes dotting the glacier-carved terrain of the adjacent Alpine Lakes Wilderness further enhances the picturesque setting. This pristine natural backdrop makes Eightmile Campground an ideal location for wildlife observation, birdwatching, and simply appreciating the tranquility of the wilderness. The terrain around the campground is generally accessible, though it serves as a gateway to more challenging mountainous landscapes, providing a spectrum of experiences for different activity levels.

As a leading offering in the Campgrounds & RV Parks sector, Eightmile Campground provides a comprehensive suite of services and facilities designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The campground features a total of 46 campsites, including 41 single family campsites, 4 double family campsites, and a dedicated group site capable of accommodating 20-50 people and up to 25 vehicles. For RV campers, sites can accommodate vehicles up to 50 feet in length, though it's important to note that hookups (electric, water, or sewer) are generally not available, requiring RVers to be self-sufficient. Each individual campsite is typically equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, facilitating traditional outdoor cooking and gathering. Restroom facilities include vault toilets, which are regularly maintained. Potable water is accessible via hand pumps located throughout the campground, ensuring campers have access to clean drinking water. Waste disposal is managed through designated trash receptacles, with an emphasis on keeping the site clean and respecting the natural environment. While firewood may be available for purchase at some national forest campgrounds, it's advisable to check current availability or plan to bring your own. The campground operates seasonally, typically from spring through fall, with opening and closing dates dependent on weather conditions and snow levels. The presence of on-site staff or a concessionaire managing the campground helps ensure adherence to regulations and provides assistance to visitors.

Eightmile Campground boasts a variety of features that make it a compelling choice for outdoor recreation. Its location provides direct access to a plethora of activities. Hiking is a primary draw, with numerous trails in the surrounding Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The nearby Fourth of July Trail, for example, offers expansive ridge line views and challenging terrain, climbing from forested areas at 4,000 feet into more open, arid landscapes with spectacular views of the Stuart Mountain Range and Icicle Valley. Anglers will appreciate the opportunities for fishing in Icicle Creek, as well as nearby Toketie Lake, which is known to harbor populations of rainbow and cutthroat trout. The campground also offers plenty of trails suitable for mountain biking. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, wildlife viewing is abundant, with chances to spot various birds, deer, and other forest inhabitants. Photography enthusiasts will find endless subjects in the diverse landscapes, from serene creek-side scenes to dramatic mountain vistas. While campfires are generally permitted in fire rings, visitors should always be aware of and adhere to any fire restrictions or burn bans that may be in place, especially during dry periods. The campground also serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring other regional attractions, including the North Cascades and Mount Rainier National Parks, which offer interpretive programs and exhibits. The Steven's Pass Historic District provides a glimpse into the area's railroad and mining history, and the Steven's Pass Ski Area offers winter sports opportunities. The campground's natural features encourage a deep connection with the wilderness, promoting relaxation and rejuvenation.

This campground is more like a boondocking area than a regular campground. There are several sites that can accommodate any size RV. It is right next to Eightmile Creek. There is a pit toilet and it was cleaner than most regular campground toilets so kudos to the Forest Service employee who takes care of this one. Of special note Google shows Eightmile Creek road as being open but this road is no longer accessible...it is blocked and plowed up off of the Custer main road. I added a pic of this.

A good place to camp but take toilet paper because the forest service does not keep the out house stocked with it
