Elk Hill Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp is located in Vanderbilt, MI 49795, USA, specifically deep within the renowned Pigeon River Country State Forest. This remote, yet accessible, location is approximately 14 miles east of Vanderbilt. Access typically involves navigating well-maintained, but unpaved, roads such as East Sturgeon Valley Road, Witness Tree Road, and Twin Lakes Road. While a review mentioned Sturgeon Valley Road being "kind of rough" at points, the dirt road portions leading to the campground are generally "well kept," accommodating vehicles towing horse trailers or RVs. As a State Forest Campground designed for equestrian use, private vehicle access is the primary mode of transportation; public transit options are not available to this secluded spot. The campground's strategic position along the famous 420-mile Shore-to-Shore Trail, which extends across Michigan's Lower Peninsula, makes it an ideal staging point for both short day rides and extended multi-day adventures. Maps outlining designated equestrian trails are available from the Pigeon River Country (PRC) Headquarters and are often posted within the campground itself, helping riders navigate the extensive system. The sense of being deep within the forest, yet still connected to a vast trail network, offers a unique blend of seclusion and expansive exploration. This combination of location and accessibility makes it a prime choice for Michiganders seeking an immersive equestrian experience.

Elk Hill Equestrian State Forest Campground and Trail Camp provides a suite of rustic yet well-thought-out services, specifically designed to cater to the needs of equestrian campers. These amenities ensure that both riders and their horses have a functional and comfortable stay in the wilderness.

  • Vault Toilets (Outhouses): The campground offers vault toilets, which are consistently praised by visitors for being "well maintained" and clean. These provide essential restroom facilities while maintaining the rustic environment.
  • Potable Water: Drinking water is available from a hand-pump well on-site. It's noted that a 5,000-watt generator might be required for the water pump at the main group site, so campers should be prepared. Water for horses is also accessible, with reviews mentioning a "water pump and river for horses."
  • Spacious and Level Pull-Through Campsites: The individual sites are described as "roomy pull-through campsites" and "fairly level," which is ideal for accommodating horse trailers and larger camping rigs, allowing for easy maneuverability.
  • Picket Posts: A crucial amenity for equestrian campers, each site is equipped with sturdy picket posts, enabling riders to securely tether their horses when not on the trails.
  • Manure Bunkers: To facilitate responsible waste management and maintain cleanliness, manure bunkers are available for proper disposal of horse waste.
  • Fire Rings: Each campsite comes with a fire ring, perfect for building campfires for warmth, cooking, and creating a classic camping atmosphere.
  • Picnic Tables: Most sites include a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meals and outdoor gatherings.
  • Group Fire Circle: For larger groups, a substantial group fire circle is available, promoting communal gatherings and storytelling around the campfire.
  • Picnic Shelter/Pavilion: A "gorgeous pavilion" or picnic shelter is present in the group camp area, offering a covered space for groups to gather, dine, or seek shelter from inclement weather.
  • Accessible Mounting Block: An accessible mounting block is provided, assisting riders with mounting their horses, enhancing convenience and safety.
  • Reservations Required for Group Sites: Unlike many state forest campgrounds, group sites at Elk Hill require advance reservations, with a minimum of 6 rigs/10 people. Individual sites are also reservable, ensuring planned occupancy.
  • No Electrical Hookups: As a rustic state forest campground, electrical hookups are not available at the campsites, reinforcing the off-grid, nature-focused experience.
  • No Showers: There are no shower facilities at this rustic campground.
  • Pet-Friendly: The campground is generally pet-friendly, allowing leashed dogs, though specific rules regarding horses apply.

Nice trails and access to the river. The drive down Stuegeon Valley Road is kind of rough but the dirt road portion was well kept. Thankfully I was with friends that had experience with their trail system because I would have been lost. Overall it was a fun overnight camping experience and I would go again.

I just went to visit some family that was calling that way. Seemed to have a pretty nice setup, pretty far off the main road. Nice fire rings and tie up areas for horses. Was impressed there was a handicap ramp to ease getting on/off of the horses. Nice wide ramp leading down to the river nearby, to water and cool down.
