Elk Lake Campground Introduce

Elk Lake Campground is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Oregon's wilderness, offering visitors an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature. Located near Detroit, OR, this charming campground provides a unique mix of rugged terrain, serene lake views, and essential amenities, making it a popular destination for campers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're seeking adventure or simply looking to unwind in the great outdoors, Elk Lake Campground offers something for everyone.

One of the standout features of Elk Lake Campground is its remote location. Accessing the campground requires a drive on a rough, gravel road that winds through scenic but challenging terrain. While this might deter some visitors, it adds to the charm and exclusivity of the experience. The last eight miles are particularly rugged, with large rocks, loose gravel, and steep cliffs, making a four-wheel-drive vehicle with high clearance highly recommended for the journey.

Once you arrive at Elk Lake Campground, you'll be greeted by calm and clear waters surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. The campgrounds are spread out, providing ample space for privacy, though some sites near the lake can feel more crowded. Each campsite features a picnic table and a metal fire pit with an attached grill, perfect for cooking meals under the stars. Vault toilets are available, though there are only two, so visitors should be prepared for limited facilities.

Elk Lake Campground also offers three day use areas close to the lake, making it ideal for those who want to enjoy the scenery without staying overnight. These areas provide a great spot for picnicking, swimming, and exploring the shoreline. The lake itself is a haven for water lovers, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, and paddleboarding. Anglers can expect to find a variety of fish species in the lake, adding to the camping experience.

One unique feature of Elk Lake Campground is its "killer trees," which are marked with tape for safety reasons. While these trees add character to the landscape, campers with young children should be cautious and ensure their kids stay away from them. The surrounding area also boasts several hiking trails, allowing visitors to explore further into the wilderness and take in even more stunning views.

Elk Lake Campground is managed by a dedicated team that strives to maintain the natural beauty of the site while providing essential services. The staff works hard to ensure that visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience, though they encourage everyone to practice Leave No Trace principles and clean up after themselves. Many guests appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the sense of community that arises when people come together to share their love for nature.

Customer reviews highlight both the beauty of Elk Lake Campground and its unique challenges. Many visitors praise the serene setting and the sense of privacy offered by the spread-out campsites. One guest noted that while the road in can be rough, it's worth the effort once you arrive at the lake. Another appreciated the space for parking and tent placement, as well as the metal fire pits with grills at each site.

However, some visitors have expressed concerns about littering and the need for better waste management practices. While the campground is generally well-maintained, it's important for guests to take responsibility for their own trash to preserve the natural beauty of the area.

The last eight miles to this campground is fairly rough with lots of baseball size rocks and some loose gravel with steep cliffs in some areas. 4 wheel drive vehicle with some high clearance is recommended. You will beat up your vehicle a little. The lake itself is calm and clear. The backdrop is beautiful. The campgrounds are fairly spread out except for the one closer to the lake, they’re extremely packed in one area. There are some other campgrounds further away from the entry that are a little more private. There’s two vault toilets that were fairly well maintained. There’s also 3 day use areas that are close to the lake. The campsites have a picnic tables and metal fire pits. There was also a few killer trees in the area that are taped off - if you have kids make sure to let them know to stay away from these hazards.

The road in can be pretty rough for long stretches but it's a great spot once you get to the lake. Plenty of room for parking and space for tents in each site. Each spot also has a metal fire pit with an attached grill. The sites next to the water are close to one another but there's enough room for privacy if you're good at placing tents. Overall a great spot, just remember to clean up after yourself when you leave (people seem really bad about that).

They have the usual vault toilets. Have a nice lake to swim/kayak, and it has fish if you're lucky to catch some. The campgrounds are great; they have fire rings, picnic tables, and good spacing for tents and vehicles. Also, there are several hikes you can go on for some great views.

This campsite was great. Location is good for exploring the areas around Bend, OR. They had plenty of water and firewood if you wanted it. The lake was Beautiful and easily accessible. The camp host, John, was also very helpful. He helped the people in the site next to us back their camper in and also offered my group a full sized axe to chop our firewood. Very reasonably priced as well.

We stayed in the resort campground in the glamping tents. Tent sites are close together, not on the lake, glamping tents are nice, beds - better than sleeping on the ground. Porta potties, mosquito's would be a negative. Shower protocol is subject to staff availability. Price is probably a bit high for what you get.
