Our large family booked 3 sites for 4 days and it was awful!! The tent sites are very small with wooden rails road ties. You are not permitted to go outside the parameter at all. There's one narrow paved driveway for each site and if you have 2 vehicles make sure you don't park on the grass. Not even a couple tires. The rangers will be on you like white on rice. Also, there's a camp patrolman who lives on each loop and they stand there and watch you, hands on hips. You will be watched 24/7. Nothing for kids to do but a small playground. We are a quiet family so we abided by the strict quiet time hours. The camp store had nothing. We needed to go into town for supplies. All in all I give it a one. Very disappointed. Buyer beware!
Great campground! I've been going since I was a baby. Only complaint is Rangers and camp store employees aren't as friendly as they used to be. Barley get any waves from the rangers riding around and the store employee barely spoke and didn't greet us at all.
We stayed from Thursday night to Sunday morning on a tent site (no power hookup). Thursday night was almost spooky how quiet it was, there were only 2 other occupied sites on our loop. Friday evening all the families started to arrive and dusk sounded like a school at recess- filled with gleeful screams and running. I give the vibe 5 out of 5, the place is serene on weekdays and fun on weekends. Firewood was very cheap at the camp store. The showers had good flow and there was a little lip separating the shower half from the dressing half to keep your feet drier. The woods around the loops look like they came straight out of a fairytale, with tulip poplars reaching for the sky and fine little greens blanketing the forest floor. There are so many great things to say about Elk Neck, but you're better served by seeing it yourself.
Very rowdy. Partying and drinking. I would not recommend staying with young children. Not safe.
The campground was clean and well maintained. We stayed on the Elk Loop. Staff that we encountered were friendly and helpful. Absolutely beautiful location and a great value for the money spent. The whole state park is beautiful and we would have loved to spend more time there hiking and kayaking. We had the campground mostly to ourselves due to predicted bad weather, but it ended up being better than expected, and overall was a very peaceful experience. We did have a small animal visit in the night which carried our dish sponge partly down the trail before apparently deciding it was too soapy. 😄 It was very quiet though and didn't cause a disturbance. We were glad all our food was in the van or tent. 10/10 would recommend this campground and we can't wait to come back in future seasons!
