One of my favourite campgrounds from our four week summer camping trip. We had a very nice private site surrounded by trees and a stream flowing behind us, close access to the toilets. The walk from the campsite to the amphitheatre/visitor center is absolutely spectacular and was actually one of my favourite short walks I found in the redwoods.

Really great campground down by the creek. The trees are covered in moss and so magical. The bathroom is clean and there was firewood for sale. It was raining super hard when we were there but we still loved it. Ideal for camper vans when it’s raining and maybe not tents. Site 55 was the best one we saw!

The best part of this campground, watching the elk. Most of the sites were clean and private. Avoid site #50, if you are in a longer RV or trailer as it was less than accommodating for our 19ft trailer. Most sites were "pull in" vs. "pull through" and some facing wrong direction to back in a trailer. There was one bathroom for the two loop campground and the men's had a horrible urine smell, all 3 days we were there. The two pay showers we used were not consistently hot nor did you get the 2 min offered per quarter. This campground was a good base for hikes in the woods, trips to the beach, and a hike at Fern Canyon. Just a tip If you pay to stay at the campground you do not need to pay the day use fee to get out to Fern Canyon.

Great access to trails. Best base camp to explore the redwood forest. Camp hosts and rangers are super friendly and knowledgeable. A bit too crowded especially on weekends but people are chill. Don't bring a big RV, it's restricted to less than 24 ft for a reason. Grocery is in Orick but you need to drive up to Crescent City to find a laundromat.

There's a reason this place is called Elk Prairie. We saw two separate herds of elk while staying here. Big, magnificent animals. The campground itself is typical state camping. Given the NorCal location, spaces are very large and not jammed together like you get in SoCal. Lots of room for kids to run around and be kids, and you can see them from your site. Your camp receipt even gets you into Fern Canyon, which was beautiful.
