Location and Accessibility: Easily Reachable for Your Convenience

Ellsworth Air Force Base FamCamp is strategically located at Ellsworth AFB, SD 57706, USA. This prime location places it just a short drive from Rapid City, making it incredibly accessible for local residents and those traveling through the area. Getting to the FamCamp is generally straightforward, though it's important to be aware of base entry procedures, especially for larger vehicles. Past visitors have noted that both GPS and provided instructions from the housing office are helpful for navigation. For those arriving with larger rigs, like a 40-foot fifth wheel, it's advisable to consider the best entry point. The commercial gate is often a preferred option, particularly during its operating hours (e.g., until 1:00 PM on Saturdays), as it can accommodate larger vehicles with ease. While the main gate is also an option, and base personnel are equipped to adjust barriers for larger rigs, confirming the most convenient entry for your specific vehicle size and arrival time can save time and ensure a smoother process. Once on base, the FamCamp is clearly signposted, guiding you directly to your relaxing retreat. Its proximity to major roadways ensures that whether you're coming from the east or west, reaching this premier South Dakota campground is a hassle-free experience, setting the stage for an enjoyable stay without the added stress of complicated directions.

Services Offered: Designed for Your Comfort and Convenience

  • Full Hookups: The campground boasts sites with full hookups, including water, electricity, and sewer connections. This ensures a comfortable and convenient stay, allowing you to enjoy all the comforts of home while surrounded by nature.

  • Level, Paved Sites: Many sites are described as cement level spots, making setup easy and stable for RVs of all sizes. This feature is particularly appreciated by those with larger rigs, ensuring a smooth and straightforward parking experience.

  • Strong Utility Connections: Visitors report strong water pressure, though a pressure reducer is recommended. Utilities are conveniently positioned on the sites for easy connection.

  • Clean and Free Laundry Facilities: A significant highlight mentioned by guests is the availability of very clean and free laundry facilities, a valuable amenity for longer stays or for refreshing your wardrobe after outdoor adventures.

  • Good Cell Service: Users have reported good Verizon and T-Mobile service within the campground, with some receiving 4 bars on Verizon and 2 bars on T-Mobile, ensuring you can stay connected.

This provides options to suit different preferences, whether you prefer shade and seclusion or open space for satellite access.

  • Overall High Quality: Many consider Ellsworth AFB FamCamp to be one of the nicer FamCamps they have stayed at, including its overflow and tent sites, indicating a consistently positive experience for guests.

  • Proximity to Base Amenities (Limited): While the base itself is described as small, offering a more tranquil environment, guests should manage expectations regarding the size of the BX (Base Exchange) or Commissary, which are present but not extensive.

We followed both our GPS and the instructions provided in the housing office email. Since we arrived on a Saturday, we called ahead to check on bringing our 40’ fifth wheel through the main gate. The visitor’s center said it should be fine, but also noted the commercial gate is open until 1:00 PM on Saturdays. Following the email's directions, we entered through the commercial gate without any issues. The airmen who checked us in mentioned that we could have gone through the front gate as well—they're able to adjust the barriers for larger rigs. We proceeded to the housing office to check in and pick up our package, as no one was staffing the office at the time, we found our welcome packet on a board just inside the entry door. We were in back-in site #6 with full hookups. The back-in was straightforward. Utilities are positioned toward the front-middle of the site, and we had no trouble connecting. Water pressure was strong, so we used a pressure reducer. We got 4 bars on Verizon and 2 bars on T-Mobile. The campground Wi-Fi was slow, with speed test results of 2.46 Mbps down and 0.71 Mbps up—barely usable. We relied on our T-Mobile home internet router instead. In this part of the FamCamp, there are trees, but satellite access should still be possible with a movable antenna. We really appreciated the size of our yard and the generous site spacing in this older section. The newer area has fewer trees and the sites are more closely packed. The base itself is small, so don’t expect a large BX or Commissary. Overall, Ellsworth is one of the nicer FamCamps we’ve stayed at to include overflow and tent sites. However, the price and limited truck gate hours on weekends plus the uncertainty about the front gate’s outbound barriers make it a bit of a hassle for large rigs—something to consider when planning your arrival and departure.

Google had a had time with directions to the camp once we got on the base. Camp is nice and clean. Sites are average size and level. Pull through are longer allowing truck parking after disconnecting. Bonus of vocal wild turkeys that perched high in a tree. Our visit was early in the year, so water was still off during the first half of our trip. There was water access outside a building to fill jugs. Staff friendly and helpful. Clean laundry facilities available.

Way over priced for the aminities. Bring your own lawn cutting equipment, the park was a jungle. Laundry facility both washers and dryers need to be repaired or replaced. Have seen the park at its prime, unfortunately it is nowhere close to what it was. Better bang for the buck off base rv parks.

As some said it is a bit pricey ($324 for the week in June) but I’ve paid more for a parking lot style site due to location… Free laundry, clean bathroom, and nice size lots on the wagon wheel sites. Concrete slab with plenty of room for my 42’ 5th wheel and 1 ton truck. Close to Rushmore and an hour from The Badlands. Walking distance to the gym which has almost everything, it is nice (1.3 mile away). 12 minute walk to exchange and commissary. Mail Dropbox at that parking lot as well as a half mile away at the post office.
