Fenske Lake Campground Introduce
🌲 **Introduction / Overview**
For Minnesotans seeking the classic Northwoods camping experience without sacrificing access to water activities, **Fenske Lake Campground** is a beloved destination. Situated deep within the **Superior National Forest**, approximately 10 miles north of the legendary outfitting hub of Ely, this campground offers a remote, peaceful escape characterized by large, majestic pine trees and the picturesque waters of 130-acre Fenske Lake. This is not just a place to pitch a tent; it is a popular base camp for fishing, hiking, sightseeing, and backcountry canoeing, thanks to its location on a designated **Superior National Forest Canoe Circle Route**.
Fenske Lake Campground is managed by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and features a small, remote loop of campsites that are generally **widely spaced apart**, promoting a quiet and private atmosphere. While one reviewer noted that sound can travel up from down the road on Saturday nights, the overall consensus highlights the serenity and the chance to observe local wildlife, such as families of grouse. The combination of easy lake access, a short nature trail, and rustic amenities makes Fenske Lake a perfect choice for families, anglers, and those who want an introduction to the wilderness that borders the BWCAW.

Customer Reviews
Overall a quick nice 1 1/2 mile hiking path. Pretty easy walking, beautiful views of the lake. Trails by September are pretty over grown so wear pants for sure. Bit hard to follow the path along the lake, some assumed trails led to camp sites.
Nice quiet campground except sound travels up from down the road and Saturday nights it sounds like you have front seat tickets do whoever is performing there. Bathrooms very clean. Hosts very nice. Had a family of grouse visit us each day for the raspberries by our campsite.
Campsite #8 was a large campsite. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. There isn't much for pictures of the site and the one I had to go by does not do this site justice. There is plenty of space for a medium sized camper up top if needed to as well. It's a very private campsite with vaulted toilets a campsite down the road. There is a path down to the lake as well. The only thing I didn't like is the larger gravel rather than the pea gravel. My pups paws didn't like it.
BEAUTIFUL campground and spacious campsites. The vault toilets were clean and well maintained. No electric, no showers, no office and no Verizon cellular service :) this is a rustic campground. We loved it despite the no’s or possibly because of the no’s? Anyway, we’ve already booked a second trip back! Only complaint is the water set-up. It’s going to take 3x as long to fill up your water tank than at the state parks but this minor inconvenience isn’t enough to dock a star. If you’re tent camping, site 7 is 👩‍🍳💋
Very nice campground. Well maintained sites. Beautiful view if you get a lake site. Fenske Lake was a fun lake to kayak too!
