Fernwood is overpriced at $150/night for basic camping. I chose it for the Big Sur location since state parks were full. The staff was friendly, even when I complained about neighbors taking over our site. However, there's no staff at night, which is a problem for the cost. The neighbors were loud, and I had a bad experience. Most RV parks have on-site staff. I'd only return if desperate. State parks are a much better value.
Our anniversary trip for a quiet weekend was a disaster. It was so noisy! The hotel room was tiny with thin walls. The bar has loud live music until late, and then noisy people hang out outside. If you want to party and not sleep, this is your place. I won't be back for a hotel room. Maybe camping far from the bar...
We stayed in a tent cabin by the river for my birthday. It had three beds (bring linens). USB outlets, but no regular ones. Hot showers (quarters needed). Clean campground. The bar/grill and store were convenient. Dogs allowed. Family-friendly. I recommend it!
Fernwood was awesome! Great tent camping by the Big Sur River and hiking. Good for families and couples. Clean bathrooms/showers. No mosquitoes! We'll be back!
Great value for Big Sur, close to state parks. The motel was quiet in September, and the store was convenient.
