Finland Campground Introduce
🌲 Introduction / Overview: Finland Campground — Rustic Access to Northwoods Trails
For local Minnesotans seeking a primitive, traditional Northwoods camping experience with unmatched access to the region’s extensive trail network, Finland Campground provides a functional base camp. Located in the heart of the Finland State Forest, this destination is managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and offers a distinctly rustic environment for campers. It is positioned at the scenic confluence of the east and west branches of the Baptism River, providing a lovely natural backdrop for the 39 available drive-in campsites.
This campground is designed to furnish only the basic needs of the camper, fitting the definition of a "primitive" site. It is a popular overflow option when the nearby, highly-sought-after state parks like Tettegouche are full, but it also serves as a destination in its own right—especially for the All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) community. A significant feature of Finland Campground is its direct, legal ingress and egress to the vast state forest ATV trail systems, including the Moose Walk/Moose Run and Red Dot trails, from 15 designated campsites.
However, potential visitors, particularly those unfamiliar with the area, should be aware of factual, reported drawbacks. Some user feedback indicates challenges with noise, particularly from traffic on a nearby road (County Road 6), and the presence of insects like horse flies and large volumes of mosquitoes during peak season. Furthermore, the campsites are often described as small, heavily wooded, and may exhibit signs of deferred maintenance, such as down trees. This campground is best suited for experienced, self-sufficient campers who prioritize trail access over tranquility or modern amenities.
📍 Location and Accessibility
Finland Campground is conveniently located just a short distance from the village of Finland, MN, deep within the Finland State Forest. The address is 233-1, Co Rd 6, Finland, MN 55603, USA. This location places it approximately 7 miles inland from Lake Superior and the famous Scenic Highway 61.
Accessibility is generally straightforward via paved and well-maintained county roads. From Highway 61, visitors take State Highway 1 to the village of Finland, then follow Lake County Road 6 for about a half-mile to the campground entrance. Despite this simple approach, campers should note the confirmed proximity to County Road 6, which can result in road noise and vehicle traffic, especially during morning hours, potentially disrupting the quiet atmosphere desired by some campers.
The campground is strategically positioned near several major recreational hubs. It acts as an excellent staging point for exploring Tettegouche State Park, George H. Crosby Manitou State Park, and the Superior Hiking Trail. Furthermore, the designated access points for ATV riders make it a key logistical center for motorized trail excursions throughout the surrounding State Forest lands.
🛠️ Services Offered
Consistent with its State Forest designation, Finland Campground provides basic, primitive amenities. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis for all individual sites, though a group site is reservable through Tettegouche State Park. Campers must be prepared for a self-sufficient experience:
- Campsites: A total of 39 drive-in campsites are available, situated in wooded areas, often described as separated and private. Each site provides a cleared area for a tent/RV, a fire ring, and a picnic table.
 - RV Accommodations: The sites can accommodate RVs and trailers, though length limits may apply, and there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups. The campground is best suited for smaller, self-contained units.
 - Toilets (Vault): Basic vault toilets (outhouses) are provided. User reviews note these are single-person units that can be basic, especially during peak use periods.
 - Water: Drinking water is available via a central pump or well, but facilities for filling large RV tanks are generally not present. Campers should fill tanks before arrival if possible.
 - Garbage Collection: Garbage cans are provided for refuse disposal, which is a key service distinguishing it from dispersed camping areas.
 - ATV Access: Fifteen designated campsites allow riders direct ingress and egress onto the official state forest ATV trail system.

🌟 Features / Highlights
While the campground is rustic and has noted drawbacks, its specific location and offerings make it appealing to a dedicated segment of the Minnesota outdoor community:
- Premier ATV Trail Access: This is the campground’s major highlight. It offers legal, convenient access to the extensive Moose Walk/Moose Run and Red Dot ATV trail systems, making it an ideal staging area for motorized recreation enthusiasts.
 - Baptism River Setting: The campground is situated at the confluence of the Baptism River's east and west branches. While the river is primarily known for trout streams (trout fishing is available in the forest), the general consensus suggests the immediate area lacks designated swimming or easy fishing access points directly at the camp.
 - Alternative to State Parks: Finland Campground serves as an important overflow option when the popular, nearby state parks (Tettegouche, Crosby Manitou) are full, often providing a last-minute site when other North Shore options are unavailable.
 - Wooded and Secluded Sites: The 39 sites are generally tucked into the woods, offering more privacy and a more secluded feeling than many open-field commercial campgrounds, despite the noted issues with size and nearby traffic noise.
 - Proximity to North Shore Attractions: It is just a short drive to the village of Finland (for basic supplies) and Highway 1, providing easy access to the entire North Shore Scenic Drive and its famous hiking trails, waterfalls, and Lake Superior overlooks.

What is Worth Choosing
Finland Campground is definitively worth choosing for a specific type of Minnesota camper: the ATV enthusiast or the highly-prepared traveler seeking a last-minute spot during peak season. This campground is unique in its dedicated and convenient access to the sprawling state forest trail system, which is the primary reason many choose to stay here. If your itinerary involves extensive ATV exploration, the logistical convenience of being able to operate directly from your campsite is unmatched in the region.
However, local users must approach Finland Campground with realistic expectations based on factual reviews. You are not choosing peace and quiet; you are choosing access and convenience for a more rustic, activity-focused trip. Campers must be fully prepared to manage insects, tolerate traffic noise (especially during the morning commute on County Road 6), and be self-sufficient regarding large water tanks and comfort amenities. For those who understand and accept these trade-offs, Finland Campground offers an affordable, practical gateway to the adventure-rich Northwoods of the Finland State Forest.

Customer Reviews
The bugs and horse flies were terrible! Single person toilets were terrible. Campsites were small and trees down everywhere that had been down for awhile. This place needs a clean up. We traveled 7 hrs and left after one night. No fishing, no swimming.
Terrible right next to a loud highway lots of traffic at 5 o'clock in the morning never camp here again. Nothing quite or peaceful a about this place don't recommend. Would definitely want a refund after that you would have to pay me to stay here.
Pit toilets could be cleaned more often... fly covered fly tapes are gross. Campsites are great, water co.es of the well very cold.
Very picturesque spot on the Baptism river. Sites are spaced apart enough to not be camping and see your neighbors. Very quite and peaceful since most people pass it by. Worth checking out of in the area!
Great place to stay, pit toilets and well water available. Sad they had to trim a lot of the trees but I’m guessing it was for good reason.
