Pennsylvania's State Forests are treasures, offering diverse landscapes and unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation, and Forbes State Forest, part of the magnificent Laurel Highlands, stands out as a prime example. Motorized Camping #1 (also known as a roadside campsite) is a testament to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' (DCNR) commitment to providing varied camping experiences. It allows campers the convenience of having their vehicle nearby for storage and transportation, while still enjoying the remote feel of primitive camping. For many Pennsylvanians, this balance of accessibility and profound seclusion makes it an ideal destination for a rejuvenating retreat. Let's delve into what makes Forbes State Forest Motorized Camping #1 a standout choice for your next truly isolated camping adventure.
Forbes State Forest Motorized Camping #1 is located in the vicinity of Rector, PA 15677, USA. More specifically, it is situated within the expansive Forbes State Forest, which stretches across parts of Westmoreland, Somerset, and Fayette counties in the Laurel Highlands region of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The exact location of motorized campsites within the vast state forest is typically accessed via dirt and gravel state forest roads. What makes this particular site unique, as highlighted by reviews, is its "gated off" access, approximately "a half mile from the rest of traffic." This gate requires a combination, which is provided upon securing a reservation and permit, ensuring a high level of privacy and reducing unauthorized access.
Accessibility to Forbes State Forest Motorized Camping #1 requires navigating state forest roads. These are generally unpaved and can vary in condition depending on weather and recent maintenance. While most vehicles can typically access them, campers should be prepared for gravel and dirt surfaces. Given the gated access, planning ahead by obtaining the gate combination from the Forbes State Forest District Office is absolutely essential for entry. The remote nature of this site means that while you feel completely isolated, you are still within a reasonable drive of communities like Rector, which can provide essential supplies. This balance of remote tranquility and relative proximity to amenities makes it an appealing choice for those who want to disconnect without being completely cut off from necessary resources. The campground is generally open seasonally, from April 2nd to the last day of regular rifle deer season, but always check DCNR's official website for exact dates and any alerts.

Customer Reviews
Great isolation with a gate that you get the combination to go through. I've been to 6 total motorized campsites and this is my #1. There are three fire pits with one in the woods so you have options for pitching your tent. You're also right near Wolf Rocks.
Secluded spot that is gated off about a half mile from the rest of traffic. You will get the occasional through hiker or biker, but otherwise it feels like you have the woods to yourself. Two fire rings and a bonus one in the woods if you look for it. Really great place to spend time away from the rest of the world.
