It’s a perfect spot for those who are self-sufficient and enjoy the peace and quiet that only a remote location can offer. If your idea of a perfect getaway involves the sounds of the forest, starlit nights, and direct access to extensive hiking opportunities, then Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 is a destination worth exploring. It's a place where you can truly unplug and reconnect with the wilderness that defines so much of our beautiful state.
Unlike crowded commercial campgrounds, Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 is designed for a more independent camping style. As a motorized site, it allows for vehicle access directly to a designated camping area, making it convenient for those with an Aliner, van, or even just a tent setup. This particular site is known for its spaciousness, offering ample room for multiple vehicles and tents, as highlighted by a satisfied camper who noted it was "roomy enough for our Aliner and van with a special private area for my son's tent." This generous space provides a level of privacy and comfort that is often hard to find in more conventional camping settings. While the emphasis is on a primitive experience, the beauty lies in its direct access to the vast network of roads and two-track ways, inviting campers to explore the surrounding forest on foot. It’s an ideal choice for those who are prepared to bring their own provisions and embrace a minimalist approach to camping, focusing on the natural environment rather than extensive amenities.
Forbes State Forest Motorized Site 2 is located on Hickory Flats Rd, Somerset, PA 15501, USA. For residents across the state, this location is accessible via a network of state routes and highways. From major metropolitan areas like Pittsburgh, the drive is relatively straightforward, heading southeast towards the Laurel Highlands region. Similarly, those coming from Harrisburg or Philadelphia can plan their route through the scenic Pennsylvania Turnpike, exiting near Somerset or Greensburg, and then following local roads to the forest entrance.

Customer Reviews
We loved it. Roomy enough for our Aliner and van with a special private area for my son's tent. Lots of hiking areas on two track ways and roads. Well kept if the previous campers clean up their mess.
Something new is that camping is no longer free. $10 per night plus $6.50 registration fee. I enjoy the remoteness of the site. Be prepared as there is no water source and no bathroom.
The other motorized site up on Laurel Mountain is better, but is busier and harder to reserve. Overall, I'd rank this as the #3 campsite of the 6 (4 Forbes and 2 Buchanan) total I've been to. You are a little near the main road but still feel a bit isolated. Problem is turnpike (less than 1 mile away) noise in the distance, however, it's still pretty great since it allows a cripple as myself to get away and isolated. Still a great feature of our state forest system. Look at other states and you'll be hard pressed to find one with free isolated vehicle camping.
Stayed in site 2. Great for hammocks but not a lot of flat space for a tent. It does have a picnic table and fire pit that were both in good shape
Nice and away from other campers. Trails are in okay shape. Nearby highway noise detracts greatly from the experience.
