We tent camped here for a quick night out. Those raccoons are hungry! Too friendly!! Please make sure to put all your food away. The dog friendly part of the campground has yet to reopen due to electrical issues after the storms. Restrooms were well kept and bugs were at a minimum.
Wide range of sites that vary in their size and privacy. The waterfront sites book quickly but are worth it for best views and typically larger sites. I’ve never found it to be particularly buggy as others have mentioned. Friendly and accommodating staff. Bathhouses are very outdated but cleaned and stocked frequently. Campground roads can be in bad condition. But you can’t beat the value for proximity to the beach. Staying at the campground allows free parking at the beach during the day.
This is our second time Camping at Fort De Soto and we look forward to coming back again. We enjoyed riding our bikes all over the place, checking out the fort, the beaches, the campground. We spent a lot of time on the water, it's wonderful for boating. We especially enjoyed going out onto north beach and looking for sand dollars. There were lots of shells to be found as well as sharks teeth. The campground itself is quite large and the sites are nicely spaced out and beautiful with trees all around. If you bring a boat, you can choose a site that where it can be kept on the water, which is really nice. The bathhouses and laundry facilities were all in good condition, clean and well kept. The camp store is really small, but I bet they have something if you need it. :)
We stayed on a waterside site in the no-pet section. We were able to anchor our small boat right off the campsite. The site was very large. There was electricity and water connections at the site. The bathhouse was right across from our site. The showers were clean and had excellent water pressure. The drainage for the showers spilled out onto the bathroom floor and the shower head was a bit leaky, but otherwise this place was impressive. The site was less than $40 per night. We had great cell reception. We were 10 minutes by boat from Shell Island Preserve that had plenty of beautiful beach to walk and swim. Even though this is Florida (where you expect a lot of bugs) we had a totally bug-free experience. We will absolutely come back!!!
Beautiful campsites - each site shaded and secluded from adjacent sites. Picnic table, electricity, water spout and grill at each site - NO fire rings. But you can have a small fire inside the grill. Water-view sites! Restrooms with lots of showers and toilets! Laundry. Camp-store. Kayak launch from campsite - no rinse station. The bugs are real here! Bring the good strong bug spray! No-see-ums are insane!!!
