What a bite of history! Museum was smallish but had great stuff and history. The remaining buildings provide a good glimpse into frontier fort living, including cutting part of the outside stucco to see the original Adobe wall. All in all, it is just off the interstate and worth the visit if you like southwest history. Then you can take another 10 minute trip further down and see Montezuma's Castle, a cliff dwelling that is just as historic!
It's rare that you actually get to interact with antique bits and pieces from the 1870s. The museum, while small gives a pretty complete picture of army life at the end of the 19th century. Also on the grounds are the officers quarters, the ring can file buildings have been torn down. The staff took their time to walk be through the museum highlighting what life was like in the wild west of 1875.
Loved visiting Fort Verde State Historic Park. I didn’t know anything this cool was in Arizona. Everything was so well preserved. The staff was super helpful and friendly. They are also very knowledgeable and will tell you the backstory to everything you’re looking at. The park had displays with QR codes that you could scan and that would lead you to YouTube videos with reenactments of people dressed in character for the display you’re looking at. It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen!
Impressively restored officers quarters which you can go into to see how they lived. $10/ adult, free parking.
The staff and historical reenactors were funny, friendly, and informative. It was our first time there, and we learned so much history. A special shout out to Sheila for taking care of our group.
