Fredenberg Creek Camp Introduce
🌲 **Introduction / Overview**
**Fredenberg Creek Camp** is a classic example of the rustic, primitive camping experience offered along Minnesota's famed **Superior Hiking Trail (SHT)**. Located deep within the rugged terrain near the North Shore community of Schroeder, this is not a drive-in facility but a designated backcountry campsite intended exclusively for hikers and backpackers traversing the SHT.
The SHT itself is a rugged footpath winding for over 300 miles along the high ridge lines overlooking Lake Superior. Campsites like Fredenberg Creek are placed approximately every 5 to 11 miles, providing essential overnight stops. They operate on a strict **first-come, first-served basis** and require no permits or fees, embodying the spirit of accessible wilderness adventure for Minnesota residents. This campsite is strategically positioned to offer a brief respite along a section of the SHT known for its constant ascents and descents through maple and cedar forests.
As confirmed by customer reviews, the site is known for being a "great" campsite with ample flat ground for tents and excellent spots for hanging a hammock, providing necessary comfort after a long day of hiking the challenging terrain of the North Shore. However, the rustic nature means water sources can be variable, requiring careful planning and filtration.

📍 **Location and Accessibility**
Fredenberg Creek Camp is located along a remote stretch of the **Superior Hiking Trail, Schroeder, MN 55613, USA**. The site is found along the section of the SHT that traverses near Highway 1 and eventually links toward the Temperance River Wayside Trailhead.
Accessibility details:
- **Hike-In Only:** This is a **backcountry campsite**, meaning it is only accessible on foot. There is no vehicle access directly to the camping area, and no camping is allowed at any SHT trailhead parking lot.
 - **Trailhead Access:** Campers typically access this section of the SHT from a nearby trailhead with overnight parking, such as the parking lots near Cook County Road 1 (Cramer Road) or the Temperance River State Park backpacker parking, both of which are near the town of Schroeder.
 - **Route:** The camp is situated near where the SHT crosses **Fredenberg Creek** and Boney's Meadow, making it a key overnight stop on this particular section of the trail. Depending on the chosen starting trailhead, the distance to the camp can vary from a short afternoon hike to a full day’s journey.
 - **Navigation:** Hikers must carry a map (such as the official SHT Databook) and be proficient in navigating a rugged, singletrack footpath that features significant elevation changes typical of the Sawtooth Mountains region.

🛠️ **Services Offered**
Fredenberg Creek Camp provides the standard, essential, and minimal services of a primitive SHT backcountry campsite, managed by the Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA) and volunteers. These facilities are designed for low-impact camping and require hikers to follow the 'Leave No Trace' ethos rigorously.
- **Tent Pads:** Established, relatively flat, durable spaces sufficient for pitching approximately 2-5 tents, depending on the site's layout. The reviews confirm **plenty of flat ground** for tents.
 - **Wilderness Latrine:** An open-air, pit-style latrine (outhouse without the enclosure) is provided a short distance from the main camp area for sanitary human waste disposal.
 - **Fire Ring:** One centrally located, established metal fire ring is typically provided for safe containment of campfires (if not prohibited by burn restrictions). Benches may sometimes be found near the fire ring.
 - **Water Source:** The camp is located near **Fredenberg Creek**. This is a natural, non-potable water source that **must be treated** (filtered, boiled, or chemically purified) before any use. Customer reviews suggest the water quality can be highly variable, especially during drought conditions, emphasizing the critical need for a reliable filter and backup water plan.

Campers must pack in all food, toiletries, and cooking supplies, and **pack out all garbage** and waste, including toilet paper and food scraps. There is no trash disposal, potable water, or cellular service at the camp.

As of 08.14.2021, water was pretty gross and only a last resort. The site itself was great and had some fantastic places to hang a hammock. I would imagine the water to be better in a non drought year.
