Spent four days isolated here. Campsite can be tight if you're turning around with a trailer, but it is worth the drive out to get away from everyone. I counted 5 vehicles passing by in the time I spent there. Coyotes came through camp a few times but never bothered me.
This site offers a nice wide open view of the south rim side of the Chisos Mountains. Good views and close proximity to the Marisicle Mine
You have no neighbors here, just peace and quiet, unless the idea of an abandoned mine concerns you...the Ranger said to ignore the ghosts! :) No power, no restrooms, no problem. Plenty of parking, and the tent pad would probably fit 4-6 tents...we had 2. Bear box there...we used it as we did hear activity around our site overnight...coyotes and javalina. If you aren't driving a high clearance 4WD with off-road tires, while you will likely make it here when it's dry, it will take you longer to get there than you expect, so plan wisely. There is one spot that I would question whether you could drive a car...a 2WD SUV or Subaru a better idea. Enjoy!
If you're planning to drive River Rd through Big Bend NP, plan a night at the Fresno campsite. You'll be all to yourself in a vast desert plain, the Chisos Mountains rising above you. And best of all, the Mariscal mine furnace ruins are a short walk away, begging to be explored. A nearby summit is an easy hike with rewarding views and a cool breeze in the hot Chihuahuan Desert. This is one of my favorite places on Earth.
Good place to camp in the Backcountry and it's near the Mariscal mine.
Beautiful, very remote site. Play "guess how many cars we'll see," and bet low. The stars are incredible, maybe the best place in the park. Mexico is just south, and we saw some spectacular lightning shows the 2 nights we camped. Pack it in, pack it out. Be respectful to nature.
