Gafvert Campground Introduce
Within the diverse array of options in the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, Gafvert Campground offers a truly rustic and immersive outdoor experience. Located in the expansive Nemadji State Forest in Minnesota, this campground is managed by Moose Lake State Park and is designed for those who appreciate a more primitive camping environment, prioritizing direct access to nature and extensive trail systems over modern amenities.
Gafvert Campground is nestled within the varied terrain of the Nemadji State Forest, which features gently rolling uplands, large swamps, steep stream valleys, and dense forests of oak and pine. The campground itself is situated along the banks of Pickerel Lake, offering direct water access and the opportunity for lakeside camping. This aquatic feature allows for swimming and fishing, providing a refreshing escape during warmer months. The forest environment surrounding the campground is rich in wildlife, with white-tailed deer, eagles, ruffed grouse, and various other bird species commonly observed. While black bears are uncommon, they do occasionally pass through the area, adding to the wild appeal. One unique environmental feature is a designated boat-in campsite on Pickerel Lake, catering to those who prefer to arrive by water. The primitive nature of the sites, often cleared areas within the forest, contributes to a genuine outdoor feeling, allowing campers to disconnect and immerse themselves in the natural sounds and sights of eastern Minnesota's swamplands, hills, valleys, and forests.
Gafvert Campground emphasizes providing the basic necessities for a genuine camping experience, adhering to a "primitive" design. The campground offers a total of 18 campsites, accommodating both RVs and tents, with all sites being "no hookup" (dry sites). Each campsite is equipped with a cleared area for setup, a picnic table, and a fire ring with a grill attachment for cooking and campfires. While there are no showers available, vault toilets are provided for convenience. Potable drinking water is accessible via hydrants within the campground. Given its primitive nature, campers are expected to be self-contained, particularly with waste management, and practice Leave No Trace principles. There are no reservation services for Gafvert Campground; all sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This approach appeals to spontaneous adventurers and those who prefer a less structured camping experience. A state forest vehicle permit is typically required for entry into the Nemadji State Forest. The campground is pet-friendly, allowing furry companions to join, though specific rules for pet management (like leashing and cleanup) are generally expected in state forest areas.
The defining features of Gafvert Campground lie in its prime location within Nemadji State Forest and its direct access to extensive trail systems, making it a hub for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Pickerel Lake Access: Beyond just lakeside camping, the campground offers a boat landing and dock, providing easy access to Pickerel Lake for fishing and swimming. The boat-in campsite is a unique feature for water-borne adventurers.
- Extensive Trail Network: Gafvert Campground is a gateway to over 200 miles of diverse trails within Nemadji State Forest. These include:
- ATV/OHV Trails: The forest boasts 121 miles of Class 1 and Class 2 ATV trails, and 144 miles of off-highway motorcycle (OHM) trails. These trails are renowned for climbing steep hills, offering scenic vistas, and connecting to other major trail systems like the Matthew Lourey State Trail and the Gandy Dancer Trail, allowing for extended riding loops.
- Hiking Trails: Approximately 3 miles of designated hiking trails are available directly from the campground, allowing campers to explore the forest on foot.
- Horseback Riding Trails: With 32 miles of designated horseback riding trails, equestrian enthusiasts will find ample opportunity to ride.
- Willard Munger State Trail: Gafvert Campground is adjacent to a section of the Willard Munger State Trail, a paved rail-trail that offers long-distance opportunities for biking and hiking.
- Hunter Access: The Nemadji State Forest is popular for hunting, and the campground provides convenient access for hunters, especially with hunter walking trails and the accessibility provided by the forest roads.
- Day Use Area: Alongside the campsites, a day-use area with picnic sites is available, offering a spot for non-campers to enjoy the lake and forest.
- Seasonal Accessibility: The campground is open year-round, though road conditions can vary significantly in spring and fall due to weather, and roads are not plowed for snow removal in winter, requiring campers to be prepared for potentially challenging access during colder months.
Gafvert Campground is promoted as an ideal destination for those looking to "unplug and relax" in the wild setting of eastern Minnesota. The emphasis is on its primitive nature, offering a quiet escape from more developed campgrounds. Its key selling points revolve around its access to Pickerel Lake for water activities and the extensive network of multi-use trails that cater to ATV riders, off-highway motorcyclists, hikers, and horseback riders. Promotional materials often highlight the opportunity to see wildlife, explore varied terrain, and enjoy simple outdoor pleasures like campfires and fishing.
While Gafvert Campground offers a self-contained outdoor experience, its location in the Nemadji State Forest means it's part of a larger recreational area. Nearby attractions and points of interest for campers to explore include:
- Moose Lake State Park: Managed by the same entity, Moose Lake State Park is a short drive away and offers additional amenities like a visitor center, the Agate Geological Interpretive Center (a must-visit for rockhounds), and Echo Lake for fishing and swimming.
- Moose Lake, MN: The town of Moose Lake provides essential services such as food, gas, and lodging, offering a convenient stop for supplies or a meal.
- Nemadji State Forest OHV Trails: The larger forest area provides countless miles of off-highway vehicle trails for extended adventures. Kiosks with emergency information are available at Gafvert Campground for riders.
- Straight Arrows Trail and Washington/Ramsey Trail: These are other interconnected trail systems in the vicinity that offer more opportunities for outdoor recreation.
- Veterans Evergreen Memorial Drive Scenic Byway: A scenic route offering picturesque views of the region's natural beauty.

Gafvert Campground appeals to a specific niche within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category: those who prioritize a rustic, quiet, and trail-focused camping experience. Its first-come, first-served policy and basic amenities make it a true wilderness escape, while its proximity to the vast Nemadji State Forest and connecting trail systems ensures endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.

Customer Reviews
Nice spot to set up camp. Arrived on a Sunday afternoon and plenty of spots were available. Campers ranged from tents to mid size RV. Excellent location for ATV trail riding. Saw many enjoying the trail while we looked around. Sites were what we expected for a state forest. There was a size to meet most expectations especially if your tenting. Road into the area was in good condition but expect it to be muddy after rain. Cell service was pretty weak for Verizon and did loose it for a time.
I absolutely LOVE Gafvert CG!!! Beautiful sites for our 32' camper and most of the sites are surrounded by trees and brush , so your really secluded! Another great thing is that there is plenty of fire wood available to foraging so you don't have to bring a ton with you! Plus it help keep the campground groomed!! Yes, there IS 4 wheeler noise but it's only coming and good noise, otherwise wheeler, motorcycles, quads etc.. are on the trails!! This I'd my Happy Place!! Heading there now!!
Some good spots like 1-4 on the lake. Poor T-mobile service, but weboost came through
A total of 18 campsites. Ten down by the lake and another eight up the hill. Both have a well water pump and also pit toilets that have 12 inch vent pipes (meaning they don't smell like hell). I missed getting a picture of #7. #12 is an accessibility site and can only be taken by non-disabled if it is the last spot open that day.
Sorry, not for me. Too many big rig RVs. Too many big ATV trailers. Too many ATVs driving thru the campground. And it was packed on a Fall Friday morning. But it is a pretty and scenic spot.
