Gallo Campground Introduce
Gallo Campground, situated within the Chaco Culture National Historical Park at Nageezi, NM 87037, provides a unique camping experience for those seeking a remote and historically rich environment. As a part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, it caters to visitors exploring the ancient Chaco Canyon.
This campground offers essential amenities, including heated bathrooms and a potable water station. However, it's important to note that there are no shower facilities, and as of recent reviews, the dump station is out of order. The camp host is reported to be very friendly and helpful.
One of the key features of Gallo Campground is its proximity to the Chaco Culture National Historical Park visitor center, approximately one mile away. The surrounding scenery is described as amazing, offering a tranquil and immersive experience in a remote setting.
Due to its popularity, especially during peak seasons like May, it is highly recommended to book reservations several months in advance. The campground's remote location also means that cell phone reception is generally unavailable, enhancing the opportunity for a truly disconnected experience.
Accessing Gallo Campground requires navigating a 21-mile dirt and gravel road from the north off Highway 550/7950. Visitors should be aware that this road can be rutted, and it's essential to check weather conditions before traveling, particularly during rainy periods.

Fabulous campground ! 1 Mile from visitor center with heated bathrooms , bring plenty of water and wood . Chaco Canyon is Beautiful! The 21 Mile road to get there is rutted and dirt/ gravel from north off 550/ 7950, check weather conditions before going especially in the rain
Quite remote and wonderful. The scenery is amazing. We stayed for 5 days in May and had to book a few months in advance. Unfortunately, the dump station is still out of order. The camp host was very friendly. The restroom with flush toilets are very clean, there are no showers but a water station with potable water. Close to the visitor center. There was no cell phone reception on the campground (we survived ....).
Camp host were great, sites really are nice. Bathrooms clean & well maintained. Stars/night skies were amazing. Easy back in spots. Camp site 17 was for tents & RVs. As you see in the pictures our 31ft fit with my truck on the side. The road to the campground is horrible. Took 1hour to drive 20 miles. Damaged two of my tires & had to replace when I got home. Extremely happy I only had 3hrs to drive.
Water and the RV Dump not working as of 11-17-23. The restroom was great and it was heated! Sucks the Restroom closer to the camp entrance is closed. Makes for a 500+ foot walk at night. I'd stay there again. Would love to see the other half of the camp fixed and opened.
Really interesting to see the ruins right behind your campsite. It's also nice to be very close to some of the trails, you can walk or bike easily to several of the trails. Campground is a little run down and the tables are a little wonky, also many sites are close together. Otherwise, it was a good experience and I'll happily stay overnight again, if for no other reason than to not have to take those 16 miles of washboard roads 2x in one day🤪
Chaco is a beautiful place and we enjoyed the hiking, but our experience was ruined. We rented a group campsite for 2 nights with the minimum number of people I could do it with which was 10 (keep in mind the max number of people is 30 who can be in the group site). We have all camped many times (at different places) before and have had no problems and we are all respectful of the fact that we are near other campers and we keep our voices down and we don’t do anything crazy or loud. However, the way the group campsite is set up we are right next to individual sites and it is on a canyon wall so it makes it so all sounds are amplified like we are in an outdoor amphitheater. After a night there and half a day of hiking and coming back to the campsite to play games, have a few beers and relax (again, not rambunctious at all), 2 rangers and a cop show up and say we have to get out immediately because there was a few people that had complained about us being too loud. We had booked for another night and had no warning, and we felt like we weren’t being loud at all, it was the effect of the canyon wall that made it sound loud. They did not let us ask questions or anything they said we had to leave ASAP, we respectfully said ok but that we had been drinking and couldn’t drive yet- one of the rangers said it doesn’t matter we had to leave now (basically telling us to drink and drive, which is crazy). The cop was like no we cannot tell them to drink and drive. So the rangers said fine, but start packing and be gone within the next hour or so. So we had to leave. I later requested a refund for the next night since we couldn’t stay and was denied the refund. The point being, I would not recommend this campsite at all, especially to anyone thinking about booking the group campsite, and to anyone who is sensitive to noise because sound carries. If someone had the max number that could be there of 30 people (or honestly any number) then I have no idea how they would not get kicked out too, even talking at a whisper the whole time. They should not have group sites available in an amphitheater where sound carries and right next to individual sites, it is just set up very poorly and designed for people to not be able to actually camp and enjoy themselves even trying to do so in a quiet respectful way. To end this on a more positive note - the one night/half-day we were there was nice, the dark sky was great and we saw the Milky Way. The hiking was awesome, and it’s a beautiful area.
Beautiful campsite with amazing night skies, perfect for bringing out the telescope. The bathrooms were the cleanest I've ever seen at a campsite. The visitor center and ruins are just around the corner and are a must-see. Word of warning: most of the road out to the site from the highway is dirt that gets very washboarded in areas. Drive carefully for your suspension's sake.
Campgrounds and restrooms were high quality and well kept. Also enjoyed exploring the ruins
