As a significant component of the Kandiyohi County Parks system, it exemplifies the offerings within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, providing a comprehensive and enjoyable experience for both casual campers and avid outdoor enthusiasts. This park is particularly renowned for its prime lakeside location, well-maintained facilities, and a friendly atmosphere that consistently draws visitors seeking a peaceful yet activity-rich getaway.
The environment of Games Lake County Park is one of its most defining features. Situated on Games Lake, which is part of the larger "Norway chain of lakes" – a system of four interconnected lakes spanning 2,800 acres – the park boasts picturesque water views and a serene natural setting. The campground itself is characterized by 52 paved campsites, many of which offer ample space and shade from mature trees, contributing to a comfortable and visually appealing environment. Reviews frequently highlight the cleanliness of the park, including the swimming beach and general grounds, making it a pleasant place for relaxation and recreation. The lake itself is known for its excellent fish population, providing opportunities for anglers to catch various species. The natural surroundings allow for observation of local wildlife and offer a refreshing escape from urban life. The park's design thoughtfully integrates recreational spaces with tranquil camping areas, ensuring that visitors can enjoy both active pursuits and quiet moments by the lake.
Games Lake County Park offers a robust array of services and amenities, catering to diverse camping preferences. The 52 paved campsites are equipped with electricity, with some offering 50-amp service, making them suitable for a wide range of RVs, including larger models. While specific details on water and sewer hookups for every site aren't always universally specified as full hookups, the presence of water access and a sanitary dump station within the park ensures convenience for RV campers. For tent campers, designated areas are available. Essential facilities include modern restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers, which are consistently praised for their cleanliness and maintenance, often being cleaned multiple times a day. Each campsite comes with a picnic table and a fire ring, facilitating outdoor cooking and evening gatherings. The park also features a camp store, which provides convenience for campers needing basic supplies, and sometimes even offers fresh ice cream. Laundry facilities are also available, adding to the comfort for longer stays. A notable service is the availability of various rentals, including canoes, kayaks, and pontoon boats, allowing visitors to easily access and enjoy the lake. The park also provides amenities such as horse shoe pits, volleyball courts, and grilling areas, enhancing the recreational options for campers.
The features of Games Lake County Park are designed to maximize visitor enjoyment and engagement with the natural setting. A major highlight is the park's excellent swimming beach, which is often cited by visitors as clean and free of "slime or lake itch," making it a popular spot for families, especially those with children. The direct access to Games Lake provides opportunities for various water-based activities, including fishing, boating, and swimming. A dedicated boat/canoe center or launch facilitates easy access to the lake for personal watercraft. The campground's connection to the "Norway chain of lakes" implies broader boating and fishing opportunities across a significant body of water. The presence of a full restaurant nearby, such as Hillcrest Restaurant, provides dining options outside of self-cooked meals. The park's accessibility to people with disabilities for camping further enhances its inclusivity. The management by Kandiyohi County ensures that the park is well-maintained and that facilities are regularly updated, reflecting a commitment to quality visitor experiences. Customer Reviews
Great place to take the kids camping. The cabins are great to stay in and easy access to the beach and docks for fishing.
Our family always enjoys time spent here! They have restrooms, hot food, ice cream and great camping spots with a wonderful beach area.
Great spots even with all the rain. Staff is great
Great campground I visit annually for decades. Features an ice cream shop and restaurant that also sells camping essentials from 9am-9pm every day. Most sites if not all have water and electric hookups. Best campground in the Willmar area, but often busy, especially on weekends, try to reserve a spot months in advance when possible. They recently added cabins, but I've never checked them out. There is a church service held outdoors every Sunday morning for those interested, but far enough from the campground as to not be distracting to those still sleeping or nonreligious folk.
We love this park. Plenty of sites not far from the lake. Pretty park. Staff was friendly and helpful.
